The Real Reason Marvel’s New Spider-Man Won’t Join the MCU

Spider-Man has long been a standout character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but not every project featuring the web-slinger will be part of its interconnected timeline. Marvel Studios recently revealed why the upcoming animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, will operate outside the MCU.

Spider-Man’s Role in the MCU

The MCU’s journey began in 2008 with Iron Man, creating an intricate narrative that interweaves heroes like Thor, Captain America, and the Avengers across multiple films and timelines. Spider-Man’s inclusion in this universe was an improbable dream until 2015, when Sony Pictures, which owns the character’s film rights, struck an unprecedented agreement with Marvel Studios. This deal allowed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to join the MCU, debuting in Captain America: Civil War (2016), while Sony retained distribution rights to his standalone films.

Over the years, the arrangement has been rocky, with profit-sharing disputes almost pulling Spider-Man out of the MCU in 2019. Fans rallied to keep him in both universes, leading to a renewed partnership. However, not every Spider-Man story fits within the MCU framework. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, set to premiere on Disney+ in January, is one such project.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Exits the MCU

The series follows an alternate version of Spider-Man, voiced by Hudson Thames (not Tom Holland), navigating a world where Norman Osborn, not Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, becomes his mentor.

Initially planned as a prequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum explained to Phase Hero that trying to align the show with MCU canon became creatively stifling. “It locked us in,” Winderbaum said, noting that adhering to the MCU’s rules meant they couldn’t explore Spider-Man’s origin or iconic rogues’ gallery.

Instead, the series takes inspiration from Spider-Man’s comic book roots, particularly Steve Ditko’s early work, crafting a narrative adjacent to the MCU while maintaining the essence of the character.

For fans of the MCU, there’s still plenty to anticipate. Marvel is actively developing Spider-Man 4, continuing Peter Parker’s journey after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). The next film will see Tom Holland reprise his role, with Zendaya making a limited appearance due to her busy schedule. Production is expected to begin in 2025, aiming for a July 2026 release.
