Report: Sony Pulled Tom Holland’s Spider-Man From ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

The story of Peter Parker, the young hero from Queens who lives by the timeless mantra, “with great power comes great responsibility,” has become legendary. Over the years, multiple actors have portrayed Spider-Man on screen, honoring the lasting legacy created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko within the pages of Marvel Comics.

With Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man (Tony Stark) and Chris Evans’ Captain America (Steve Rogers) stepping away, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has transitioned into a new era called the Multiverse Saga.

Spider-Man’s cinematic journey began with Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002 to 2007) — currently rumored to make a comeback. Following Maguire, Andrew Garfield took over the role in The Amazing Spider-Man series, with the first film debuting in 2012, followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014.

Spider-Man’s narrative and characters have been reimagined across various media, from animated shows to blockbuster films, and its lasting appeal has solidified it as a timeless cornerstone of superhero storytelling.

Perhaps no movie represents this Multiversal madness better than Spider-Man.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Tom Holland’s Peter Parker faces the consequences of his secret identity being exposed by Mysterio. This leads to a series of events where Peter, seeking help from Doctor Strange, accidentally tears open the Multiverse and begins an Incursion (smashing together of universes).

With all previous cinematic Spider-Men now integrated into The Walt Disney Company’s MCU narrative, the next chapter in the MCU’s grounded, street-level storytelling will feature the fan-favorite Daredevil (2015) series from Marvel Television’s Netflix era.

Sony Won’t Let Marvel Use Spider-Man?

Anonymous insider My Time To Shine Hello shared a fascinating (alleged) tidbit — apparently, Marvel actually wanted Spidey to make an appearance in the much-anticipated soft reboot — until Sony seemingly “said no”:

Marvel tried but Sony said no 😔

They only allow Spidey to be on the Avengers

At least he’s mentioned in Born Again

It definitely seems like Sony is being particularly precious with the web-slinger. It is their meal ticket, after all. Perhaps the logic behind stopping Marvel Studios (and, by extension, Kevin Feige) from using Spider-Man more casually in the MCU is to make sure that any character appearances remain rare (and, therefore, profitable in something like a major summer blockbuster film).

Unfortunately, Sony seems to ignore the potential benefits of bringing Spider-Man closer to the mainstream MCU — and getting fans even more invested in the wall-crawler.
