Right now, Disney is fully dedicated to producing a plethora of live-action remakes of some of their most popular animated films. From Aladdin to The Little Mermaid, Disney has continued to produce live-action remakes in recent years.
However, it has become clear in the last year that these remakes are falling in popularity. Fans are feeling burnt out by the mass quantities of remakes being pushed out by Disney. In the last couple of weeks, announcements regarding a live-action Tangled and Princess and the Frog were met with a lukewarm public reaction.
Casting Rumors Swirl for New Disney Remakes
With these remake announcements came rumors about who will play the Princesses in these films. Florence Pugh was named as a likely choice for Princess Rapunzel, which so far has been received well by fans. When it comes to casting the role of Princess Tiana, another very accomplished actress has been rumored to be Disney’s top choice.
According to rumors, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o is being considered for the leading role of Tiana. Nyong’o has worked with Disney numerous times in the past in both the Star Wars franchise as well as the Black Panther films. For a live-action film to succeed, Disney needs to secure a cast of big names. There is no doubt that Nyong’o has that kind of star power.

Disney Aims High for New Live-Action Film
Nyong’o is an incredibly talented actress who is known for her portrayal of complicated and intense characters. Seeing her take on a role like Tiana would be so exciting and something very new for her. Fans have also not heard Nyong’o sing very much, so this would be an opportunity for her to showcase that skill.
The Princess and the Frog is set in the vibrant city of New Orleans and tells the story of Tiana, a young woman who dreams of opening her own restaurant, whose plans are detoured when she is transformed into a frog. The animated film was released in 2009 and received critical acclaim for its stunning visuals and memorable songs.
While Nyong’o’s potential casting has gotten good feedback, many fans are still pushing for Disney to bring back Anika Noni Rose, who voiced Tiana in the live-action film. She absolutely crushed the acting and singing elements of that movie, and there is no reason why she wouldn’t be able to be in the live-action version.
As of now, no casting announcements have been made by Disney. In the meantime, fans will be eagerly anticipating a formal reveal.
