Actor Johnny Depp has finally made his long-hoped-for return to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but not quite into scenes from the Pirates 6 film just yet.
Depp’s Long-Standing Success in Hollywood
Johnny Depp began acting in the early 1980s with a tiny role in Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street. He then landed a starring role in the television series 21 Jump Street, though television was not where Depp wanted to remain.
But a role in 1990–that of Edward Scissorhands in the film by the same name–would not only mark the first time he starred in a film by director Tim Burton, but it would also forever serve as his springboard into the entertainment industry.
From 1990 forward, Johnny Depp became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors. His became a household name, even in households of people who might not have watched his films.
Over the course of his career, which seemed to come to a screeching halt when his former spouse began to defame his character by falsely accusing him of domestic violence and abuse, Depp has been in more than 80 films, but of all his works, he is perhaps best known for his role in the films in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which debuted in 2003, as the incomparable, unmistakable, often-inebriated, and very witty Captain Jack Sparrow.
Over the years, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has grossed more than $4.5 billion worldwide and ranks as the 16th highest-grossing film series of all time.
Continued Questions About Depp’s Return to ‘Pirates’
In June 2022, following the revelation of the jury’s findings in Depp’s defamation suit against his former spouse Amber Heard, Depp continued to be seemingly blacklisted by many of Hollywood’s biggest movie houses. Disney had cut ties with Depp in 2018, and Universal Pictures replaced him in one of the Harry Potter-inspired Fantastic Beasts sequels.
The trend hasn’t exactly let up as of the time of this publication, as Depp’s continued participation in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise remains up in the air.
But fans of Disney’s scurvy film series have made it clear that they want nothing to do with a Pirates 6 film that doesn’t include Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Recently, one report claimed that Disney would entertain Depp’s return, but only in a far-removed, much smaller role than the one Depp embraced in the first five films–one that experts say almost single-handedly grew the franchise into what it is today.

Disney went woke a long time ago. Walt Disney would destroy a lot of this corporation if he came back to life. Disney Corporation should be groveling at the feet of Johnny Depp. I would pay top dollar to see Johnny as Jack Sparrow again. He is a brilliant actor and a wonderful man.
