‘James Bond’ Franchise Expands With Official New Series, ‘Sunbreaker’

James Bond’s future is taking shape across several different fronts, even as fans wait to discover who will inherit the 007 designation on the big screen.

Now, another project has entered the picture, with IDW Publishing planning to release a new series from celebrated writer Grant Morrison called Sunbreaker.

The announcement comes as Amazon MGM Studios prepares its next cinematic take on the character. Denis Villeneuve (the Dune films) will direct the upcoming film, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight handling the screenplay. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are also attached, however, the studio has yet to reveal its next James Bond.

Elsewhere, the franchise is branching out into interactive entertainment and audio. IO Interactive’s 007 First Light, starring Patrick Gibson as a younger Bond, has sold millions of copies worldwide, with potential sequels reportedly discussed under Amazon MGM. An audio adaptation of Charlie Higson’s novel Young Bond: SilverFin is also expected in October.

The literary side of 007 continues to grow, too. Recent and upcoming titles include King Zero and James Bond and the Secret Agent Academy, the latter scheduled for 2027. Against that backdrop, Sunbreaker will offer another interpretation of the iconic spy.

The six-part project brings together Morrison, whose previous work includes All-Star Superman and Batman, and IDW Publishing, the company behind long-running Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters titles. The collaboration was announced by Ian Fleming Publications in a statement confirming the new partnership.

Morrison has promised a Bond story that combines familiar ingredients with unexpected developments. His description points to new vehicles, gadgets, dangerous opponents, and an ultimate villain drawn from contemporary headlines. He also envisions a world of deception and violence in which Bond remains an exceptionally formidable presence.

Whether Sunbreaker will share a timeline with 007 First Light or Amazon MGM’s upcoming movie has not been established. No publication date has been announced for the new series.

For collectors, another Bond release is already on the calendar. Titan Comics will publish Ian Fleming’s James Bond Signature Comic Strip Collection Vol. 1 on February 23, 2027, bringing together seven original newspaper adventures.

With a new film in development, fresh stories appearing across multiple formats, and Sunbreaker now officially announced, the Bond universe has plenty of room for further reinvention.
