‘James Bond’ Movie Reboot Could Break Franchise Tradition With Multiple 007 Actors

The search for the next James Bond actor has officially begun, but Amazon MGM Studios could be looking beyond simply finding one new star to replace Daniel Craig.

While countless actors have been linked to the role over the past year, reports suggest the studio is actually searching for an unknown British male actor in his late 20s or early 30s.

That could indicate Amazon MGM is planning a fresh start for the franchise rather than chasing an established Hollywood name.

The upcoming reboot, unofficially known as James Bond 26, will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, the filmmaker behind the Dune films, while Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is writing the script. David Heyman (the Harry Potter films) and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Homecoming) are attached as producers.

Whoever ultimately lands the role will follow Daniel Craig’s five-film tenure, which included Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015), and No Time to Die (2021).

However, Amazon MGM doesn’t necessarily have to follow the traditional Bond formula.

Amazon MGM Could Cast Several James Bond Actors

Historically, every version of James Bond has been played by one actor throughout their tenure. But with the franchise entering a new era, the studio could choose a different approach by casting multiple actors to portray 007 across different points in his life.

Rather than introducing audiences to a fully formed MI6 agent, the reboot could explore Bond’s transformation from a young recruit into the legendary spy seen in previous movies.

That would allow different actors to portray Bond during his childhood, his years at Eton, his early MI6 career, and eventually his time as the experienced agent audiences recognize.

A multi-actor approach would be a major departure for the franchise, but it would also give Amazon MGM the chance to create a more complete portrait of one of cinema’s most enduring characters.

The wider Bond franchise is already moving in that direction. IO Interactive’s newly released video game 007 First Light stars Patrick Gibson as a young Royal Navy air crewman recruited into MI6’s Double O program, while Charlie Higson’s Young Bond novel SilverFin is being adapted into an audio dramatization featuring Isaac Rouse as teenage Bond.

For now, Amazon MGM has revealed very little about its plans. But after inheriting one of the biggest franchises in entertainment history, the studio has an opportunity to do something Bond has never done before.

Could James Bond 26 be the first movie to feature more than one actor as 007?
