Previous James Bonds Return in New Sequels, Another Expected To Reprise Role

While most audiences associate 007 with the long-running film franchise, the famous MI6 agent has existed across multiple timelines, continuities, and interpretations for decades.

Long before Amazon MGM Studios began preparing its next cinematic chapter, James Bond was already continuing his adventures in novels, comics, games, and spin-off stories.

Now, several literary versions of the character are making a return.

Several Different Versions of 007 Are Returning at Once

Among the latest releases is Hurricane Room by Kim Sherwood, the third novel in her Double O trilogy.

The series began with Double or Nothing before continuing with A Spy Like Me, shifting much of the focus away from Bond himself and onto the wider network of Double O agents operating within MI6. Nevertheless, the books remain firmly rooted within the world of 007.

Another continuation arrives later this year with The Man with the Golden Compass by Vaseem Khan.

Scheduled for release in October, the novel follows Quantum of Menace as the second installment in The Q Mysteries. Rather than centering on Bond, though, the series follows Q, the intelligence service’s legendary gadget master. Bond still appears throughout the stories, allowing readers to experience the familiar universe from a different perspective.

Charlie Higson is also revisiting one of the franchise’s most successful literary branches.

Earlier this year, the author announced King Zero, a new addition to the continuity he established with Young Bond. Although the novel features an adult version of 007 rather than the teenage spy readers met in SilverFin, it continues the world built across Blood Fever, Double or Die, Hurricane Gold, and By Royal Command.

King Zero is expected to arrive this September.

James Bond Has Also Returned in Gaming

While publishers continue expanding Bond’s literary legacy, the character is also experiencing a resurgence elsewhere.

Last month, IO Interactive launched 007 First Light, introducing a completely new interpretation of Bond portrayed by Patrick Gibson. Best known for playing the young Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin (2024), Gibson now headlines a younger version of the spy in what is expected to become a larger gaming franchise.

The success of First Light has already fueled speculation about future installments, particularly after reports suggested the game sold close to three million copies during its opening weeks.

Meanwhile, Amazon MGM Studios is developing a new James Bond film directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) and written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). The project will serve as a new start following Daniel Craig’s departure in No Time to Die (2021), with casting director Nina Gold reportedly overseeing the search for the next actor to take on the role.

Until that mystery is solved, fans have no shortage of Bond adventures to keep them occupied.

007 First Light is available now. The next James Bond film does not yet have a release date.
