Controversial Dwayne Johnson Film Confirmed for a Major Sequel

Actor Dwayne Johnson hasn’t received the best news as of late.

Dwayne Johnson, who got his start in the WWE with the name The Rock, broke into Hollywood playing the role of the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns (2001) alongside Brendan Fraser. From there, he became a major box office attraction and has now been in more than his fair share of movies over the last two decades, including many hits. Unfortunately, he’s been on a bit of a rough streak lately.

A couple of Johnson’s latest films, Black Adam (2022) and Disney’s Jungle Cruise (2021), did not perform well at the box office. Though both of these movies were supposed to have sequels, they were put in jeopardy by the bad performance we saw at the box office. Johnson was essentially cut from the DC Universe when James Gunn took over the studio, and now fans have been waiting to see what might be next for the actor. Outside of acting, Dwayne Johnson’s bank account took a hit this spring with the inaugural season of the XFL under his leadership. The Rock and his business partner Dany Garcia reportedly saw the league lose more than $60 million.

Though we know that Dwayne The Rock Johnson is set to star in a live-action version of Moana, in which he’ll be an Executive Producer and reprise his role as Maui, we haven’t heard much else from him since he made a reappearance in the Fast & Furious franchise.

Now, a controversial sequel has been confirmed.

Actress Gal Gadot recently confirmed that there are talks for her, Dwayne Johnson, and Ryan Reynolds to team up again for a sequel to Netflix’s Red Notice (2021). Though the film had a large volume of streams, jumping as high as the fifth-highest streamed movie at the time of its release, it fell flat in the eyes of critics. Rotten Tomatoes rated the movie with just a 36% approval rating, which is abysmally low, especially for a film that had such star-power.

Because of how lowly-rated it was, many believed that this would be the end of seeing Johnson, Reynolds, and Gadot team up. That’s not the case, after all. Gadot confirmed in recent comments that a script for the movie is now complete.

“We’re all talking about it,” Gadot said. “I don’t know if I can say anything! I already read the second script and it’s… whoo! We’re all very excited about it!”

Netflix has not confirmed when production for the film might begin, but it should be noted that Ryan Reynolds will be filming Deadpool 3 for the next several months. Once production for the Marvel film wraps up, we might have more details on when Red Notice 2 might be released.

As far as another sequel that Dwayne Johnson fans might want to see, Disney has kept quiet on if it will make Jungle Cruise 2. Though the original plan was for the film to have a second movie, this has been put on the back-burner for the time being and it’s unclear if we’ll ever see The Rock reprise his role as Skipper Frank Wolff alongside Emily Blunt again.
