Whoopi Goldberg Confirms ‘Sister Act 3’ Script Is Near Completion!
On September 30, Hocus Pocus 2 was released on Disney+ and it was an immediate hit. It had been nearly 30 years since the Sanderson sisters — played by Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker — were last seen, but that didn’t stop fans from flocking to the streamer. Fans had been asking for a Hocus Pocus sequel for years and were thrilled that Disney had finally listened to them.
And it looks like the excitement and success of Hocus Pocus 2 has inspired Disney to get to work on a third film in another popular franchise — Sister Act!
As you may or may not know, Kathy Najimy — who reprised her role as Mary Sanderson in Hocus Pocus 2 — was also one of the stars of Sister Act, alongside Whoopi Goldberg, Dame Maggie Smith, and Wendy Makkena. Najimy — who played nun Sister Mary Patrick — recently sat down with Goldberg and the other women of The View to talk about Hocus Pocus 2 and reminisce about their time together on Sister Act.
It was then that Goldberg revealed to Najimy that a script was in the works for Sister Act 3. Here is the conversation, transcribed by Entertainment Weekly:
“I haven’t heard anything formal about 3 yet, I’ve heard rumblings of it. I think it’d be a blast of fun. I look forward to the nuns that we were with that are still with us, seeing them again, they were fantastic, so much fun,” Najimy said, later asking Goldberg: “Where is that at? Is that happening?”
The Oscar-winning Ghost actress confirmed to Najimy that the third film “is happening,” and that they’d be “getting a script at the end of the month” with producer Tyler Perry on board.“It took a little while, but it’s happening. You all helped that happen, I think, because they brought Hocus Pocus back,” Goldberg added. “They finally said, ‘We might as well put those nuns back out there and see if they have any juice.'”
Disney confirmed that they planned to make Sister Act 3 back in 2020 and shared that Goldberg was on board to return as Sister Mary Clarence. However, no further details were shared at that time.
Now, we know from Tyler Perry that a script is just about done, and it appears that Goldberg isn’t the only one who is excited about the new movie. It is about time we saw Sister Mary Clarence (AKA Deloris) and Sister Mary Patrick back in action!
