Disney is celebrating Veterans Day today by honoring those who have served in our military, but the honor doesn’t stop today.  The brave men and women who wear the uniform and answer our country’s call to defend our freedom deserve our respect and gratitude every day of the year. Not just on November 11, and that is exactly what Disney does.

Every day at both Disney’s Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Park, veterans have the opportunity to participate in the daily flag retreat ceremony. This Year Disney was proud to host some exceptional veterans during this beloved park tradition.  One, in particular, was William McCroskey, a WWII veteran who chose to spend his 100th birthday at Magic Kingdom! McCroskey served our nation as a Merchant Marine, playing an integral role during the historic D-Day operation in Normandy in 1944, transporting replacement troops onto the beach. Disney Legend and WWII U.S. Navy Veteran Alex Stromski was also in attendance wearing his Navy Dress Whites uniform to celebrate and honor McCroskey.

In February, Disney Publishing and Disney Cruise Line collaborated with Blue Star Families– a nonprofit for and by military families – to host the 20th “Blue Star Books” event at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in Opa-Locka, Fla. as part of the Blue Star Books program to encourage reading among military children.

In August, Disney was host to hundreds of elite military athletes from the U.S. and allied nations at the 2022 Department of Defense Warrior Games. This inspiring event celebrated the resiliency and dedication of wounded, ill, and injured active duty and veteran U.S. military service members as they competed in a variety of adaptive sporting competitions.

The Walt Disney Company also celebrated the 10th anniversary of its Heroes Work Here program, which has facilitated the hiring of more than 12,500 veterans since it was established in 2012. Disney remains committed to hiring veterans whenever possible to fill various roles in the Parks and beyond.

Disney has also welcomed military musical talent like “Airmen of Note” and The West Point Glee Club at Disney Springs and the California Army National Guard 40th Infantry Division Band at Disneyland. These patriotic events are always popular with guests.

Most recently, Disney kicked off this year’s National Veterans and Military Families Month with an inspiring flyover by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds air demonstration team on Oct. 27, 2022. This inspiring event kicked off Disney’s month-long celebration of service members, veterans, and their families.

We at Disney Dining would like to extend our thanks to all who have served. Your service makes our freedom possible and there is not a day that goes by that we are not grateful for that. From one veteran to another, thank you for your service.

About Jill Bivins

Jill Bivins has been visiting Disney Parks since she was 2 years old and loves sharing her Disney adventures with the world. She likes to say Disney is in her blood and writing is in her bones — so any time she has the opportunity to combine these loves she is one happy camper! She has a deep abiding love for Epcot and as a die hard Star Wars fan has a serious love for Hollywood Studios as well. When she isn't exploring or writing about Disney Parks, Jill is homeschooling her 8 year old son, playing with her brand new baby son, or pretending to be a farmer on her family homestead (despite being unable to keep even a cactus alive).
