Disney has just recently announced that Catherine Laga’aia has been cast in the lead role of Moana in the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the beloved animated film. At only 17 years old, the Sydney, Australia native will be stepping into a massive role as Moana. Fans are excited to see a newcomer get such an incredible opportunity in this upcoming film.

Set to hit theaters on July 10, 2026, this remake is generating significant buzz among fans and critics alike. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”

 

More Casting Decisions Revealed

Adding to the stellar cast lineup of the highly anticipated Moana live-action adaptation, the film features Auckland native John Tui stepping into the role of Moana’s steadfast father, Chief Tui. Across the screen, Samoan-New Zealand talent Frankie Adams will embody the essence of Moana’s spirited and determined mother, Sina, bringing a dynamic portrayal to the character.

Joining this ensemble is Rena Owen, originating from the scenic Bay of Islands in New Zealand, who takes on the pivotal role of the cherished Gramma Tala with depth and authenticity. With these new decisions made, Director Thomas Kail, who is known for this direction for Hamilton on Disney+, is confident that the film will be a success. Also on board as a producer is Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music in the original film. Overall, this story seems to be in great hands. This film will happen in addition to Moana 2, which will release later this year.
