In 2016, Disney introduced viewers to its first Polynesian princess with the release of its newest animated film, Moana. The film starred newcomer Auliʻi Cravalho as the voice of the title princess and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the demigod, Maui. Moana lived on an island that was slowly dying, but her people were too scared to leave. So, Moana leaves, determined to restore the heart of Te Fiti, and bring prosperity back to her home.
Even though the film was released nearly eight years ago, Moana fans’ love for the film has not slowed down. On April 3, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Moana was actually the most streamed movie of 2023. That’s right. During a year when Disney released films like Haunted Mansion, The Little Mermaid, and Elemental, the seafaring princess film topped them all.
Back in February, Disney shocked everyone when it announced that a Moana sequel film would be coming out THIS YEAR. The film was actually supposed to be a new series for Disney+, but what was made was so loved that Disney decided to turn it into a feature-length film. And that will be released in November.

On April 3, Disney held its Annual Shareholders Meeting and, during the meeting, Bob Iger shared an exclusive first look at Moana 2! According to Iger, the film will take place three years after the events of the first film.
Disney also shared a little bit more about what viewers can expect from this highly-anticipated sequel film:
In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ all-new epic animated musical, Moana 2, three years since her first voyage, Moana is on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui.
Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
