Not long ago 45,000 Cast Members at Walt Disney World got a well deserved raise after successful negotiations between the Union and Disney. The new deal not only includes an immediate bump to $18 /per hour, it also includes retroactive pay. This comes after months of disagreement and threats of a strike.

Beginning last October, Disney and the Service Trades Council locked heads over Cast Member wages. The Union made demands that Disney attempted to thwart with small concessions. The Union wanted nothing less than $20/ hr for Cast Members. Disney made several counter offers, but every one was rejected by the unionized Cast Members.
Eventually, however, Disney had no choice but to give into the demands of the Union on behalf of the Cast Members. When Disney presented their latest offer of $18/hr immediately and a $1/hr raise over the next two years for a total increase of $5/ hr bringing Cast Member pay to $20/hr plus retroactive pay, Cast Members overwhelmingly voted to accept.

Despite being promised retroactive pay, the details on exactly what that would entail remained unclear. Today we have a clearer picture of when Cast Members can expect that well earned windfall. Rather than one lump sum, Cast Members will see two payments. One for hours worked October 2 2022-March 25, 2023 and another from March 25 until Disney officially enacts the raises which could be up to 8 weeks from now. The amount each Cast Member will receive depends on their current rate of pay and the number of hours they worked within the eligible time frame. Most Cast Members will receive $2-$3 per hour worked

This is a great victory for Cast Members. We can think of no group at the Walt Disney Company more deserving of a pay increase. Without the tireless efforts of Cast Members there would be no Disney magic.
