The Jim Henson Company has released a statement addressing Disney’s announcement to close Muppet*Vision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a move that has sparked widespread disappointment among fans.
Earlier this week, Disney confirmed the closure of the beloved attraction, marking the end of an era for a show many considered a cornerstone of the park. Since its debut in 1991 at the then-Disney-MGM Studios, the 3D experience, directed by Jim Henson, has captured hearts with its blend of cutting-edge technology, live-action Muppet performances, and Kermit the Frog’s signature charm.
Fans of the Muppets have been vocal about their frustration, especially given the show’s significance as one of Henson’s final projects before his death in 1990. To many, Muppet*Vision 3D serves as a heartfelt tribute to Henson’s innovative legacy.
Its removal, which paves the way for a new Monsters, Inc. (2001)-themed land, has led to criticism over Disney’s use of other underutilized real estate, such as the Star Wars Launch Bay (please, Disney, just let it go).
In their statement, The Jim Henson Company acknowledged the attraction’s historical and emotional impact:
Jim Henson’s final project was Muppet*Vision 3D, now regarded as a true theme park classic. Innovation was always Jim Henson’s north star, and his trailblazing career led him to a unique challenge: a truly immersive Muppet experience where audiences are part of the happy chaos of the iconic Muppet Show.
Originally debuting in 1991, Muppet*Vision 3D combined 3D technology with real-world practical effects, alongside animatronic and live Muppet characters. The result was a one-of-a-kind Jim Henson experience, and an unforgettable capstone to Jim’s magnificent career. As we learn of the show’s upcoming closure in its current form at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we look forward to Muppet*Vision 3D’s next act.
The closure has triggered an outpouring of grief and nostalgia on social media. Many fans have shared their personal connections to the attraction, with one noting, “Hearing Jim’s voice in that attraction always made me so emotional. I’ll miss it.” Another wrote, “The attraction is a living tribute to Jim, and it’s beyond heartbreaking that it’s being removed.”
While the future of Muppet*Vision 3D remains uncertain, Disney has hinted at plans to preserve elements of the show for fans. Speculation includes a potential release on Disney+ or even a relocation to another Disney park.
In a surprise twist, Disney also announced a new Muppets-themed ride to replace Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, offering some hope for the franchise’s continued presence at the parks.
What are your thoughts on the closure of Muppet*Vision 3D?
I love the roller coaster’s and Rock N Roller Coaster is one of the best. The music makes the ride perfect I hope they don’t turn it into a muppet ride .
