On Sunday, Ludo Studio, BBC Family, and ABC Kids finally shared the news that Bluey fans across the globe have been anticipating since November 2023, and it’s quite literally the biggest Bluey news (so far) of 2024.

‘Bluey’ Fandom Just Keeps Growing

The adorable Australian children’s animated series first debuted in 2018 and was an overnight sensation.

Preschool kids, alongside their older siblings, parents, grandparents, and other family members, were immediately drawn in by the Heeler family: Bluey, her younger sister Bingo, and her parents, Chilli and Bandit. For some viewers, it was the silly antics of Bluey’s dad, Bandit, and for others, it was the sweet camaraderie between the Heeler sisters.

For others, it was the profound message in each episode, always delivered simply and with compassion. There were even some parents who immediately fell in love with the series, saying that it had actually made them better parents.

But regardless of what it is that initially draws fans to the series, they keep coming back for more, and there doesn’t seem to be any end to the success of the show–or fans love for it–anytime soon.

‘Bluey’ Takes “Fandom” to a Whole New Level

Children’s programming has been a part of network, cable, and streaming channels’ offerings for decades. The British Broadcasting Company, or BBC, which was responsible in part for the commissioning of a children’s series from Ludo Studio that resulted in Bluey, is credited with broadcasting the first children’s television program in the U.K. in 1946.

Other children’s shows followed in the United States, including Howdy Doody (1947), Captain Kangaroo (1955), and The Electric Company (1971).

The first commercial-free children’s series was Sesame Street, which was broadcast on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), and featured a mix of real people–adults and children alike–and puppets, some of which could be a bit grouchy at times.

Broadcast for the first time in November 1969, Sesame Street became the gold standard in children’s programming, even being described as “the water that all other children’s shows swim in.”

But the new gold standard in children’s programming might just be from the talented minds at Ludo Studio in Queensland, Australia, where Bluey is produced.

Three Extraordinary Seasons. Now What?

The production team for Bluey wrapped after the third season of the series, the last ten episodes of which debuted in the United States on Disney+ on January 12, and rumors began to swirl about the third season being the final season.

But producers and creators of Bluey say it’s not so, but that they planned a hiatus of sorts before they got back to the work of creating episodes for a fourth season. As of the time of this publication, neither Ludo Studio, BBC Family, nor ABC Kids has announced a date for the debut of Season Four.

But in November 2023, they did announce the upcoming debut of a brand-new stand-alone episode of the series titled “The Sign.” However, there was no word on the release date of the episode, which would be very different from any Bluey episode in the series, as it would last 28 minutes rather than the usual seven to nine-minute-long episodes.

‘The Sign’ – New Episode of ‘Bluey’ Finally Gets a Release Date

Details about the newest installment of Bluey from Ludo Studio have been extremely scarce. The studio released a teaser trailer for the new episode, but clips from the trailer only served to spur rumors, speculation, and “wonder-ifs” from fans around the globe.

Only a few things about the new episode have been confirmed. We know that there will be new voice actors involved and that the episode will run nearly one-half hour, but until now, we only knew that the episode would air sometime in 2024.

On Sunday, however, Ludo Studio finally shared the release date of “The Sign,” along with a surprise we weren’t expecting. Per IMDb:

Award-winning kids’ show “Bluey” will be back in April with a fresh episode and its first-ever special, which will also mark the series’ first global rollout. Disney Branded Television, BBC Studios Kids & Family, and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation have set a premiere date for the new episode “Ghostbasket” on Sunday, April 7, teeing up the debut of the 28-minute special, “The Sign,” which will premiere a week later on Sunday, April 14.

Both episodes will air first via ABC Kids in Australia and then roll out globally the same day across Disney+, Disney Junior and Disney Channel in all other available regions (with the exception of China and New Zealand).

The reveal of the bonus episode, titled “Ghostbasket,” is a pleasant and welcome surprise, especially for Bluey fans who don’t know what they’ll do until Season Four of the show finally airs.
