Sebastian Stan Panics Marvel Fandom Over Fatal ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Warning
Sebastian Stan knows better than most actors how carefully Marvel guards its biggest secrets. That didn’t stop him from dropping a comment that could have fans preparing for the worst.
Bucky Barnes will return in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), joining a huge collection of MCU heroes and familiar faces from outside the main Marvel timeline. Exactly what happens when those characters collide with Doctor Doom remains under wraps.
Stan isn’t offering answers. However, what he did say about the upcoming battle suggests that some characters won’t make it out alive.
Sebastian Stan Leaves Marvel Fans With an Ominous Tease
During an appearance at Tokyo Comic Con, Stan discussed Avengers: Doomsday (2026) without revealing specific details about the story.
“I don’t know if I can say very much about that,” Stan said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see who makes it or who doesn’t.”
He also brought up Robert Downey Jr.’s MCU return as Doctor Doom, saying Downey will have “something in store for everybody.”
Stan stopped well short of confirming that Marvel plans to kill Bucky or any other character. His choice of words nevertheless leaves plenty of room for fans to worry.
Disney has already set enormous stakes for the crossover. Its description places heroes from three universes on a “deadly collision course” as they face an existential threat.
Avengers: Doomsday (2026) will arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.

Bucky Barnes Finally Has Somewhere to Belong
Of all the possible characters Marvel could put in danger, Bucky would be a particularly painful loss.
Stan has portrayed Steve Rogers’ childhood friend since Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). Bucky’s path eventually turned him into the Winter Soldier, with Hydra controlling him and forcing him to carry out deadly missions.
Breaking free didn’t immediately solve everything.
Bucky spent years confronting his past and trying to figure out what his future should look like. Thunderbolts* (2025) finally moved him in a different direction.
He joined Yelena Belova, John Walker, Red Guardian, Ghost, and others before the group became publicly known as the New Avengers.
Instead of facing his past alone, Bucky once again found himself with a team. That makes the possibility of losing him even more difficult to consider now.

Marvel Could Bring Bucky’s Redemption Story Full Circle
Of course, a long MCU history doesn’t guarantee a character will survive.
Marvel proved that in Avengers: Endgame (2019), when both Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff died despite being major parts of the franchise.
Bucky has now spent roughly 15 years in the MCU. If Marvel decided to end his story, the character has enough history for that loss to carry significant weight.
One possibility would be a final act of sacrifice.
Bucky spent much of his life haunted by people he hurt while under Hydra’s control. Giving his life to protect others could provide a powerful ending to that journey.
For now, though, that’s entirely speculation.
Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) comes next, meaning Marvel could use Avengers: Doomsday (2026) to narrow its enormous roster before the Multiverse Saga reaches its final battle.

Marvel Has Plenty of Other Veterans to Put in Danger
Bucky isn’t the only character whose future could become a major question.
Chris Evans is officially returning as Steve Rogers, putting one of the MCU’s most important heroes back in the Avengers story. Chris Hemsworth will once again appear as Thor after more than 15 years with the franchise.
The movie also reaches into Marvel’s X-Men history.
Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming, and Kelsey Grammer are among the confirmed returning actors. Any of those characters could potentially become part of an emotional farewell.
Speculation has also surrounded Tobey Maguire.
Maguire returned as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and rumors have repeatedly connected him with another possible appearance. Marvel has not confirmed his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), so any potential involvement is purely speculative.

Marvel May Not Let Everyone Reach Secret Wars
Nobody outside Marvel’s inner circle knows whether Bucky survives the coming fight.
Stan could simply be protecting spoilers while giving fans something to talk about. But his comments arrive before a movie already positioned around enormous stakes and generations of Marvel characters.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) showed how far Marvel will go when an Avengers story calls for major consequences.
Bucky could survive. Steve Rogers and Thor could make it through untouched. The returning X-Men might also live to fight another day.
Or Marvel could be preparing some painful exits before Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
Stan isn’t telling fans which outcome to expect. For now, his warning leaves one uncomfortable possibility hanging over Avengers: Doomsday (2026): getting all these heroes into one movie doesn’t mean Marvel has to bring all of them back out.
