Report: Tom Hiddleston Opens up About Loki’s Death in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Tom Hiddleston has shared more information about Loki’s storyline in Avengers: Doomsday (2026).
Since his MCU debut in Thor (2011), Loki has seemingly died multiple times, only to return through deception, alternate timelines, or the rules of the multiverse.
His first death came at the end of Thor, when Loki fell from the Bifrost into space. Two years later, Thor: The Dark World (2013) staged another death on Svartalfheim, before revealing that Loki had survived and secretly taken Odin’s place on Asgard.
That luck ran out in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) when Thanos killed Loki in the film’s opening minutes, telling Thor there would be “no resurrections this time.” For that version of the character, there weren’t – but Hiddleston’s time in the franchise wasn’t over yet.
Avengers: Endgame (2019) created a loophole. During the Avengers’ trip back to 2012, Loki escaped with the Tesseract, creating the variant who went on to lead two seasons of Disney+’s Loki.
By the end of Season 2, Loki had taken on a different role. He sacrificed the life he wanted to hold the branching timelines together, leaving him seated at the center of the Multiverse and positioned to play a major role in whatever comes next.
His return, therefore, does not undo his death in Infinity War. Instead, Doomsday is bringing back the Loki who escaped the Battle of New York and eventually became the multiverse’s reluctant guardian.
Now Hiddleston is returning in Avengers: Doomsday. With the multiverse under threat, one question has followed him back into the MCU: Is Marvel preparing to kill Loki one more time?
Tom Hiddleston Nearly Says Too Much About Loki’s Fate
Hiddleston appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, where the conversation turned to his character’s impressive collection of onscreen deaths.
Horowitz asked whether Hiddleston or Patrick Stewart, who returns as Professor X in Doomsday, could end the film with the Marvel record for most deaths. Hiddleston started working through Loki’s history before realizing that answering the question too carefully could give something away.
“I’m not as well-versed in the Patrick Stewart lore. Look, if I keep going down the path of the end of this sentence, I will find myself revealing things that… it depends what you …I’m going to stop. I have to stop.”
It is hardly confirmation that Loki dies in Doomsday. Still, Hiddleston abruptly cutting himself off has inevitably fueled theories that another death could be on the table, particularly given how closely Loki is now tied to the multiverse.
Marvel has revealed relatively little about Loki’s exact role. The film will bring together heroes from three different universes against an existential threat, with Robert Downey Jr. playing Victor von Doom.
Anthony and Joe Russo are directing, with Stephen McFeely credited as writer. The enormous cast includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), James Marsden (Cyclops), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), and Hiddleston (Loki).
So, just a few actors – and with recent reshoots allegedly adding more cameos, this list is expected to grow.
That lineup brings the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and other corners of Marvel together ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). Exactly where Loki fits remains unclear, but after the ending of Loki Season 2, it is difficult to imagine the multiverse collapsing without reaching him.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026 (although some theaters are slated to host previews as early as December 16).
