Robert Downey Jr. Officially Reprising Iron Man, Disney Confirms in D23 Shock Reveal

D23 just dropped a Robert Downey Jr. announcement that Marvel fans probably didn’t see coming.

Years after Tony Stark’s story seemingly reached its final chapter, Disney has officially confirmed that Downey will play Iron Man again.

That’s especially surprising considering Marvel already has a completely different role waiting for him. Downey is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, seemingly putting his Tony Stark days behind him.

Apparently, that isn’t the whole story.

Disney has now revealed another side of Downey’s Marvel comeback, and this time, he’s returning to the role that helped define the MCU.

Iron Man Seemed to Have Reached the End

Robert Downey Jr. became one of the faces of the MCU from its earliest days.

He debuted as Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008), helping launch what would eventually become a massive interconnected franchise. Tony quickly grew beyond his original story and became an essential part of the Avengers.

His relationships with other heroes also shaped some of Marvel’s biggest stories. Steve Rogers became both an ally and a rival, while Peter Parker developed a close connection with Tony as the MCU moved deeper into the Infinity Saga.

But Tony’s story eventually reached an emotional conclusion.

In Avengers: Endgame (2019), Iron Man used the Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos and his forces. Tony knew the decision would cost him his life, and his sacrifice brought Downey’s original run as the character to an end.

That made the idea of seeing him as Iron Man again much more complicated.

Robert Downey Jr. Found a Different Way Back to Marvel

Downey eventually agreed to return to the MCU, but Marvel surprised audiences by giving him an entirely different identity.

The actor will play Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday (2026).

That announcement put Downey back at the center of Marvel’s future without reversing Tony Stark’s ending. It also created an unusual situation where the actor most closely associated with Iron Man will now portray a major Marvel villain.

D23 has now added another layer to his comeback.

Downey may be Doctor Doom on the big screen, but Disney is also bringing his Iron Man back.

Two New Attractions Bring Tony Stark Back

Disney shared new details about Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab, which are both scheduled to open at Disney California Adventure in 2028.

Avengers Infinity Defense will recruit guests for a battle across the Multiverse against King Thanos, a version of the villain who succeeded in his reality.

The attraction will combine large physical environments with screen-based scenes as guests travel between different locations. Its ride system will be similar to the 3D system used for Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure at Tokyo DisneySea.

Several familiar MCU stars will also participate.

Iman Vellani will appear as Ms. Marvel in the pre-show. Jeremy Renner will reprise Hawkeye, while Anthony Mackie returns as Captain America and Chris Hemsworth plays Thor.

And Downey will once again appear as Iron Man.

His involvement doesn’t stop there.

Stark Flight Lab will place riders inside “gyro-kinetic pods” that move along a track before connecting with robotic arms. The robots will have their own personalities, taking inspiration from Tony Stark’s DUM-E.

Downey will return as Tony Stark for this attraction as well. Mackie will appear as Captain America, while Brie Larson reprises Captain Marvel.

For guests, that means two different opportunities to encounter Downey’s Tony Stark when the attractions arrive in 2028.

Is Another MCU Iron Man Return Possible?

The park appearances inevitably raise another question: Could Downey eventually play Iron Man in an MCU movie again?

For now, Disney hasn’t announced anything like that.

Downey’s confirmed theatrical future with Marvel involves Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), so his return to Disney California Adventure shouldn’t be taken as confirmation that Marvel plans to resurrect Tony Stark on the big screen.

Still, Marvel has spent years exploring the Multiverse, giving the studio plenty of storytelling possibilities if it ever wants another Tony Stark to appear.

More importantly, Downey is clearly willing to revisit the character in some form.

Whatever happens in the MCU, one part of his Marvel future is already settled. Robert Downey Jr. will play Iron Man again, with Tony Stark officially returning to Disney California Adventure in 2028.
