Marvel Just Confirmed MCU Reset Starting 20 Years After ‘Iron Man’

Marvel Studios used its D23 Entertainment Showcase platform to formally advance its long-teased reset of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, confirming a wave of casting decisions for its upcoming X-Men feature alongside a locked release date of May 2028.

The panel, led by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, arrived amid a packed release calendar that includes Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously helmed Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Both films are expected to serve as connective tissue between the current Multiverse Saga and the mutant-centered chapter that follows.

A Reset Years in the Making

Feige first signaled the studio’s intentions in a 2025 interview with Variety, distancing the plan from the language of a “reboot” while confirming a shift toward a singular timeline. “Reboot is a scary word,” Feige told Variety. “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines.” He further noted at the time, “‘X-Men’ is where that will happen next.”

That framing has now translated into a firm production timeline, with Feige joined on stage at D23 by director Jake Schreier, who most recently helmed Thunderbolts* (2025), and newcomer Sadie Sink, who made her MCU debut last month in Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026).

Casting Announcements Take Shape

Sink’s role as Jean Grey had already generated speculation ahead of her turn as the antagonist opposite Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a release that has continued to perform strongly at the global box office and is approaching the $2 billion mark.

In the weeks preceding D23, Marvel had already confirmed Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Emma Frost and Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers/Cyclops. At the showcase itself, the studio added four further roles to the roster: Christopher Abbott (Girls) as Professor Charles Xavier/Professor X, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Ororo Munroe/Storm, and Adam Driver (The Force Awakens) as Nathaniel Milbury/Mr. Sinister.

Driver, appearing via video from Pinewood Studios rather than in person, used his segment to address ongoing fan speculation that he had been cast as Magneto. “When Kevin told me to show up for X-Men, I assumed he meant on set,” Driver said, per Marvel.com. “So instead of being there in California, I’m here at Pinewood [Studios] on this very lonely soundstage.” He continued, “Kevin and I have been talking for years about maybe joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And I think we finally found the perfect film at the perfect time. So I’m very excited to be playing Mag…. Nope. Even better. Nathaniel Milbury. So I’ll be right here, waiting for everybody to show up.”

Strategic Positioning Ahead of the MCU’s 20th Anniversary

The timing carries symbolic weight: X-Men arrives roughly a year ahead of the MCU’s 20th anniversary, which traces back to Jon Favreau’s Iron Man in 2008. Feige has previously framed the mutant property as thematically distinct from the studio’s Avengers-centric output. “They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong,” Feige told Variety. “That’s the universal story of mutants, and that is where we’re going.”

None of the newly announced X-Men cast, including Sink’s Jean Grey, has been formally attached to Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. However, given Marvel’s reported efforts to consolidate its release slate, the possibility of crossover appearances in Secret Wars or an accompanying post-credits sequence is likely, particularly as the studio consolidates momentum from Spider-Man: Brand New Day and anticipation surrounding Avengers: Doomsday heading into its next production cycle.
