The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday (2026) is packed with headline moments, from Thor’s apparent showdown with Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) to the return of the X-Men and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) wielding Mjölnir once again.

Yet despite everything Marvel Studios squeezed into the footage, fans have become fixated on something much smaller: Robert Downey Jr.’s voice.

The trailer marks audiences’ first proper in-canon look at Downey as Victor von Doom following his surprise casting announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024, and many viewers believe the actor has already managed to distance himself from Tony Stark.

RDJ’s Doom Voice in Doomsday Is Impressing Fans

Since Downey’s casting was announced, one question has overshadowed almost every discussion surrounding the film: could audiences ever stop seeing Iron Man whenever he appeared on screen? Based on the trailer, many fans think the answer is yes.

“Holy sh*t, I didn’t recognize his voice,” one viewer posted on X (Twitter).

Another admitted they “didn’t even know that was supposed to be him,” while others praised the actor’s apparent Eastern European accent and how dramatically different he sounds from Tony Stark.

One fan compared the performance to filmmaker Werner Herzog, while another argued that anyone who believed Downey accepted the role purely for a payday had underestimated his commitment as an actor.

The overwhelming consensus online is that Downey has successfully reinvented himself as Doctor Doom—at least vocally. Whether that impression lasts throughout the full film remains to be seen, but Marvel appears to have made an encouraging first impression.
