
After much anticipation, Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid (2023) recently dove into theaters. Now, it’s already swimming to a physical and digital release.

The original Little Mermaid (1989) film not only delighted audiences, it also saved the animated musical genre and revived musicals as we know it.
As audiences grew bored with Walt Disney Studios films and movie musicals, The Little Mermaid stepped in (or should we say, ‘swam in?’) and changed everything. In fact, the film even kicked off the entirety of the Disney Renaissance!

If it weren’t for The Little Mermaid’s heartwarming tale, Jodi Benson’s enchanting voice, Alan Menken’s fantastic score, and Howard Ashman’s iconic lyrics, we may not have had amazing films such as Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), and more.
In short, Disney and its fans owe a lot to the original movie, which is why the live-action version had huge shoes to fill, or should we say ‘fins?’

In any case, The Little Mermaid (2023), starring Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel and Jonah Hauer King as Prince Eric, lived up to the expectations…more or less.
While the reviews are a mixed bag, they’re mostly positive, making it one of the most well-received live-action adaptations in Disney’s history thus far.

If you want to watch The Little Mermaid in the comfort of your own home, you finally can! The film is coming to DVD and digital release later this month, on July 25, less than two months after splashing into theaters.
Oddly enough, though, there’s currently no release date for Disney Plus (Disney+). Stay tuned to Disney Dining to hear more about the film’s release onto Disney’s streaming service.
