The original Little Mermaid (1989) film not only delighted audiences, it also saved the animated musical genre and revived musicals as we know it.

If it weren’t for The Little Mermaid’s heartwarming tale, Jodi Benson’s enchanting voice, Alan Menken’s fantastic score, and Howard Ashman’s iconic lyrics, we may not have had amazing films such as Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), and more.

In short, Disney and its fans owe a lot to the original movie, which is why the live-action version had huge shoes to fill, or should we say ‘fins?’
