Confirmed! ‘Practical Magic 2’ Is in the Works!

In 1998, Warner Bros. released the fantastical film Practical Magic, starring Sandra Bullock, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Aidan Quinn, and Evan Rachel Wood. Bullock and Kidman play Sally and Gillian Owens, respectively, two sisters who are a part of the magical Owens family. Their family has been watching over their town for centuries, despite the fact that the townspeople were very weary of the two young women and their aunts., whom they live with.

Why are the townspeople weary of the Owens family? Because their ancestor, Maria Owens, had survived an attempted execution after being found guilty of witchcraft. But that is not the only thing hanging over Gillian and Sally’s heads.

Maria found herself pregnant and alone at a time when that was entirely unacceptable. When the father of her child never returned, Maria cast a spell over herself, making her incapable of falling in love. Sadly, that spell became a curse, ensuring that none of her descendants would be able to find success in love.

Unfortunately, Gillian finds herself in a relationship with a dangerous man, who Gillian and Sally accidentally kill. The man, Jimmy, then inhabits the body of the state police officer investigating Jimmy’s disappearance. That officer, Gary, finds himself having feelings for Sally, and when Sally and Gillian exorcise Gary and destroy Jimmy, the curse that has been haunting the Owens family is finally broken.

It has been nearly 30 years since audiences last saw Gillian, Sally, Aunt Frances, and Aunt Jet. Then, on June 10, Warner Bros. shocked and delighted many by announcing that a Practical Magical sequel film was in the works!

At this time, we do not know much about the sequel film. However, insiders who spoke to TheWrap said that the studio is in talks with both Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The two women are both reportedly considering returning to reprise their roles as the Owens sisters. However, that has not yet been confirmed.

TheWrap is also reporting that Practical Magic 2 is being written by Akiva Goldsman, who was also one of the writers of the original film. Should Bullock and Kidman sign onto the project, they will serve as producers, alongside Denise Di Novi.

Di Novi is a director and producer who has worked on several hit films and television shows, including Outlander, Sneaky Pete, Ray Donovan, and Bones.
