Universal Studios Shocks Fans with Demolition of Iconic Roller Coaster!

Nine years after the opening of Universal Studios Florida, a second theme park was launched — Islands of Adventure. This new park packed a variety of thrilling roller coasters, immersive themed areas, and much more. Yet, Universal continued to push for excellence, aiming to be a significant competitor to Disney.

In 2009, Universal Studios Florida unveiled a groundbreaking roller coaster that offered a unique experience unavailable elsewhere in Central Florida. The Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit propelled guests on an exhilarating, high-speed ride while allowing them to select their own soundtrack for the journey.

The ride notably starts with a lift, sending riders 167 feet into the sky while they lie flat on their backs, a thrilling and nerve-wracking experience.

Despite being over 15 years old, the attraction remains incredibly popular, although many guests find themselves unable to experience it due to size restrictions.

Unfortunately, fans of the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit will soon lose their chance to enjoy this cherished ride.

On December 26, it was revealed that Universal had submitted a permit to demolish the roller coaster and replace it with a “proposed attraction.” Details about this new attraction, including its theme, construction timeline, and opening date, are currently unknown.

For many, the news of the ride’s closure was not entirely unexpected, as rumors had circulated about its potential shutdown for several years. However, this permit marks the first concrete evidence that Universal has been planning its closure for some time.

The "Notice of Commencement" is an official document from the state of Florida, county of Orange. It features fields for permit numbers, property details, and signatures, akin to preparing for a thrilling adventure at Universal Hollywood or experiencing the excitement of Rip Ride Rockit.

As for what will take the place of Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, the paperwork suggests it could be another thrilling roller coaster, with roller coaster manufacturer Intamin scheduled to oversee this new project.

This won’t be Intamin’s first collaboration with Universal; the company is currently developing two roller coasters for the resort — one themed to How To Train Your Dragon (2010) at Epic Universe, set to open on May 22, 2025, and another, Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, which is under construction at Universal Studios Hollywood and slated for a 2026 opening.

Are you disappointed to see the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit going? Was it a must-ride for you, or something you could skip while visiting the parks? Share your thoughts in the comments!

  1. Hollywood RIP Ride Rocket is one of my favorite rides to go on while visiting Universal Studios. My favorite part was the lift at the beginning. It’s shame they’re going to get rid of it it was so fun to go on
