Universal is spending billions of dollars to reshape the future of the theme park industry.
The company has spent the last several years expanding far beyond its traditional footprint, opening new destinations and investing heavily in experiences designed to rival Disney’s growing global portfolio.

In May 2025, Universal opened Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, its first new Florida theme park in more than two decades. The resort added lands inspired by Nintendo, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, and Universal Monsters, marking one of the largest projects in the company’s history.
Another addition is arriving even sooner. Universal Kids Resort is set to debut in Frisco, Texas, bringing family-focused attractions themed to franchises including Shrek, SpongeBob SquarePants, Jurassic World, and Minions.
Now, Universal has shared major new details about another ambitious development that could become one of the most significant theme park projects ever built outside the United States.

Universal Confirms Multi-Billion-Dollar Investment
Universal has officially unveiled fresh information about Universal United Kingdom Resort, the company’s upcoming theme park destination in Bedfordshire.
The project is scheduled to open in 2031 and will become Universal’s first theme park resort in Europe. It follows years of speculation surrounding the company’s plans for the region and represents a major step in its international growth strategy.
On Wednesday, the British government revealed the scale of Universal’s financial commitment.

According to officials, Comcast NBCUniversal will invest more than £5 billion ($6.7 billion) during the resort’s anticipated five-year construction period. The company has also pledged an additional £1 billion ($1.3 billion) over the first decade of operation.
The British government is contributing its own support through a £1.3 billion ($1.7 billion) infrastructure package aimed at improving transportation around the site.
Planned improvements include upgrades to the A421 road network and nearby rail services, helping accommodate future visitors while also improving connections for local communities.
Government officials described the agreement as one of the largest tourism investments ever made in the United Kingdom.

Thousands of Jobs Expected Before Opening Day
Construction is expected to begin soon, with preliminary enabling works already underway.
Universal says more than 100 employees are already working on the project in the United Kingdom. Interest in future positions appears significant, with the company reporting more than 33,000 expressions of interest from potential applicants.
Around 80% of the eventual workforce is expected to come from Bedfordshire and surrounding areas.
Current projections estimate the resort will create approximately 28,000 jobs across both construction and long-term operations.

Officials also believe the development could generate nearly £50 billion ($67 billion) in economic benefits by 2055.
“This historic partnership is a special moment for our company as we bring our first Universal theme park and resort to Europe,” Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts said in a statement.
“We have a long and proud history in the United Kingdom through Sky and NBCUniversal and look forward to creating a spectacular destination that supports the U.K. creative industries and brings joy to millions for generations to come.”
Universal Destinations & Experiences Chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury also celebrated the announcement following the project’s official groundbreaking ceremony.

“Today marks a significant milestone on our journey to bring Universal United Kingdom Resort, featuring immersive storytelling, thrilling attractions and unparalleled creativity and innovation to the UK,” Woodbury said.
Universal has not yet revealed what attractions or themed lands will be included inside the resort.
Rumors have pointed to potential franchises ranging from James Bond to Back to the Future. Reports have also suggested that Harry Potter could ultimately play a role in the project, despite earlier claims that the franchise would not be represented due to its proximity to Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter.
