The Walt Disney Company has been beaten out by its biggest competitor.
The rivalry between Disney and Universal has existed for a long time. Both companies have established themselves as powerful forces in the world of theme parks and entertainment. They also both produce some incredibly popular movies. For years, the debate on if Universal or Disney is better has entertained fans. In the past, Disney has consistently been more successful and popular with the public than Universal. However, that all changed this week. In a wild twist of events, Universal has dethroned Disney and created a more popular movie.
Universal Reigns Supreme
Who would have thought?
Both Disney and Universal are responsible for some of the most iconic movies of all time. They both specifically thrive with animated movies. While Universal has had some great hits, Disney always ended up being the most popular. This has all changed as of this week.
Before this week, Disney was the champion of the Box office. On Thanksgiving weekend of 2019, Disney’s hit movie Frozen II was a smash hit. The movie raked in $358 million and broke the record. Frozen II, which stars Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, has gone on to be one of the most popular Disney movies of all time. Many thought that this record was not going to be beaten for a long time.
This weekend, Universal and Illumination had a massive win with the release of The Super Mario Bros Movie. In just five days, the film raked in $377 million. This record blew Disney out of the water.
A New Dawn for Universal
This is huge news for Universal/ Illuminations. The movie stars Christ Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and so many others. The film currently has a 96% fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Only time will tell if Disney will be able to get back at Disney and become the record holder once again.
