Universal Makes New Fix to Troubled Epic Universe ‘Harry Potter’ Ride

One of Epic Universe’s most impressive attractions has also given Universal plenty to deal with since opening day.

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry immediately became a major draw when Epic Universe opened in May 2025. More than a year later, massive waits and operational problems continue to follow the attraction.

Universal has now completed another fix at the ride, although this one has nothing to do with its complicated ride system.

Battle at the Ministry Gets New Flooring

Guests exiting Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry will now encounter new tiling inside the attraction’s exit hallway.

The work took roughly a month to complete, and the replacement flooring is noticeably different from the tile surrounding it.

Rather than recreating the original surface exactly, Universal installed flooring featuring a different nonslip pattern and material.

Wear and tear may explain the decision to use a different material in this area. With thousands of guests moving through the attraction, Universal may have chosen something better suited to handling that constant foot traffic.

On its own, replacing flooring isn’t particularly unusual at a theme park.

What makes the situation interesting is the attraction’s age. Battle at the Ministry has only been operating since Epic Universe debuted a little more than a year ago.

Bigger Problems Have Followed the Harry Potter Ride

The new flooring is also an easy fix compared to some of the challenges Universal has encountered with Battle at the Ministry.

The attraction debuted with a Virtual Queue rather than immediately offering a regular standby line. Universal eventually eliminated that requirement and moved Battle at the Ministry to standby.

Guests can now get in line whenever the attraction is operating, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll ride anytime soon.

Wait times can easily climb beyond 100 minutes.

Battle at the Ministry has a relatively slow loading process, creating capacity problems for an attraction with enormous demand. Downtime has also caused headaches since the park opened.

When the ride goes down, those capacity problems can become even more noticeable once operations resume.

Those issues don’t have the same simple solution as replacing a section of flooring. Increasing capacity or making major accessibility changes could require considerably more work.

Epic Universe Maintenance Is Becoming Normal

Battle at the Ministry isn’t alone in receiving attention as Epic Universe moves through its second year.

Universal has already begun completing the park’s first scheduled refurbishments.

Yoshi’s Adventure, Mine-Cart Madness featuring Donkey Kong, and Viking Training Camp all temporarily closed for brief refurbishment periods this past spring.

The next round of maintenance will affect How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk.

The Untrainable Dragon is scheduled to close September 15 and remain unavailable through September 20, 2026.

Fyre Drill will undergo its own maintenance period several months later, closing January 25 through February 4, 2027.

These closures remain relatively brief, which is expected for a park that’s still so new.

Still, Epic Universe’s first year has shown how quickly a massive theme park begins requiring adjustments once millions of guests start putting attractions and infrastructure through daily use.

Universal has generally addressed those problems as they appear. Some fixes are straightforward, while challenges involving ride reliability, capacity, and accessibility aren’t nearly as easy to solve.

For Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, Universal can now cross one more repair off the list. Whether bigger operational changes eventually follow remains something to watch as Epic Universe continues through its second year.
