HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Scraps ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’ in Major Franchise Reset
HBO is already tearing up parts of its new Harry Potter adaptation.
The reboot has been positioned as a closer adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels, with each season expected to cover one book and restore material cut or changed for the films.
But that process is already prompting major revisions.
According to The Sun, Warner Bros. executives have reportedly scrapped initial scripts for season two, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, with plot and characterization among the areas still being refined.
Major scenes reportedly due to begin filming in August have now been pushed back until October while scripts are completed and approved. HBO and Warner Bros. have not publicly confirmed the reported disruption.
At the same time, the reboot is also reversing a change that has been attached to the franchise for nearly three decades.
HBO Drops ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’ From the New Harry Potter Era
When Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in the UK in June 1997, its title referenced the legendary alchemical object at the heart of Rowling’s first story.
Scholastic changed the name to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when the book was published in the United States on September 1, 1998.
The publisher reportedly believed “Philosopher’s Stone” would not immediately communicate magic to younger readers, leading Rowling to agree to the alternative.
The change carried over to Warner Bros.’ first Harry Potter movie in 2001, when it was released as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States, while the UK and numerous other markets retained Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) even filmed alternate takes so dialogue could match both versions.
HBO is now reversing that decision for its new adaptation.
A television tie-in edition of Rowling’s first novel will be released on November 3, 2026, using imagery from HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.
According to Wizarding World Direct, Scholastic will publish the new edition as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The move follows HBO’s own decision to use Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as the title of its opening season.
The new paperback now brings Scholastic’s television tie-in edition in line with that branding, dropping Sorcerer’s Stone from the version tied directly to the reboot.
Existing copies are not being renamed or removed. Scholastic still sells editions carrying the familiar Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone title.
Instead, the November edition establishes Philosopher’s Stone as the name attached to HBO’s new version of the story.
The wording also restores the meaning behind Rowling’s original title.
The philosopher’s stone comes from centuries of alchemical legend and was believed to turn base metals into gold while helping create an elixir of life.
That history directly feeds into Rowling’s story, where Nicolas Flamel possesses the Stone and Lord Voldemort attempts to steal it to restore himself.
‘Chamber of Secrets’ Is Also Being Reworked
The title change is arriving alongside bigger reported revisions behind the scenes.
Season two was officially greenlit in May, with Warner Bros. moving quickly to keep the adaptation progressing as its young cast grows older.
HBO boss Casey Bloys previously said the goal was to avoid a long gap between seasons.
That makes the reported script reset significant.
According to The Sun, the original Chamber of Secrets scripts have been discarded, with writers continuing to refine both plot and characterization before major filming moves ahead.
The reported delay shifts key production from August to October, although neither HBO nor Warner Bros. has publicly confirmed that timetable.
Dominic McLaughlin leads the reboot as Harry Potter, with HBO planning to adapt all seven novels across multiple seasons.
That format gives the series far more room to restore characters, plotlines, and details removed from the original film adaptations.
The HBO era of Harry Potter will begin with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on December 25.
