Things aren’t looking great for this beloved film’s reboot.
Back in 2019, fans of the original Honey, I Shrunk the Kids film could finally rejoice after Disney announced a reboot of the classic movie. Fans were hopeful that the upcoming sequel would bring the same nostalgia that the original film captured.
Disney Bringing Back an Iconic Franchise
The original Honey I Shrunk the Kids film was released in 1989 and received positive feedback from both critics and audiences worldwide. It starred Rick Moranis as Wayne Szalinski, an inventor who accidentally shrinks his children, Nick and Amy, and their friends. The success of the original movie led to the development of two sequels, Honey I Blew Up the Kid and Honey We Shrunk Ourselves.
The new Honey I Shrunk the Kids reboot was going to star Josh Gad, who would play Nick Szalinski, Wayne’s now-teenage son. Gad is known primarily for his work in Frozen and the live-action Beauty and the Beast. The original film’s director, Joe Johnston, would be returning to lead the reboot.
Unfortunate News For “Shrunk”
Since it was announced, no further details have been revealed about the reboot. Fans have begun to grow concerned over whether or not this reboot is still happening. The fear of fans came true when Josh Gad revealed the current situation of the project in a tweet. He said;
“A lot of u ask me what’s going on with this film. Truth is, we were inches from starting and then COVID hit, inches from starting again & then my schedule exploded with conflicts, inches from starting again & budget got the best of us. If you want it, let your local @disney know.”

Unfortunately, Covid seemed to have resulted in a lot of cancellations. Earlier this year, Josh Gad also revealed that, as of now, a remake of The Hunchback of Notre Dame was also off the table. It is looking like fans of this iconic film may not be getting a reboot after all.
