Marvel Cinematic Universe sweetheart Tom Holland is known to superhero fans as none other than Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man. He has starred as the web-slinger in three of his own movies and three more related Avengers films. Tom Holland is also widely admired for his romantic relationship with co-star Zendaya.
After filming his most recent project The Crowded Room, a TV series on Apple TV+ that also stars Amanda Seyfried, it all became a little too much for Holland to handle. The show follows Holland’s character after he is arrested for a shooting in New York City. Seyfried plays the interrogator.
Fans of the English actor were shocked when he publicly revealed his struggles with mental health and sobriety. Now, Tom Holland will step away from acting for at least a year for his own good. He blames it on the intensity of filming The Crowded Room.
Tom Holland explained the combination of a difficult character and the added responsibilities of being a producer to Extra TV:
I love the learning curve of becoming a producer. I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve always sort of lived by this idea that hard work is good work. I really enjoyed it, but then again, the show did break me. There did come a time where I was sort of like, ‘I need to have a break.’ I disappeared. I went to Mexico for a week and had some time on a beach. And I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was.
Considering Holland started acting as a child by starring in Billy Elliot: The Musical in London and rose quickly to stardom in the movie world afterward, a break seems well deserved. He admitted he was “terrified” to play The Crowded Room character, which is admittedly a far cry from Peter Parker.
As there don’t seem to be any Tom Holland Spider-Man films on the way, Marvel fans can rest easy that his acting hiatus probably won’t affect Marvel Studios.
Tom Holland plans to spend time with friends and family, play golf, and be a “regular bloke from Kingston.”
