Streaming Shake-Up as Disney+ Snags Hit Show After Netflix Drop

Just a few years ago, families had limited choices when it came to finding kid-friendly entertainment. Saturday morning cartoons and DVDs ruled the living room. Then came the rise of streaming services, changing the way we consume content almost overnight. Platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and YouTube now dominate the landscape, offering on-demand programming that caters to every age and interest.

In fact, it’s hard to remember a time before these platforms became household staples. YouTube alone has grown into one of the most visited websites in the world—and while Disney+ is the newest of the major streamers, it has rapidly established itself as the go-to destination for family-focused content.

Since its launch in 2019, Disney+ has become home to Disney classics, Pixar favorites, Marvel blockbusters, Star Wars series, and more. But in the never-ending streaming wars, it’s not just about what you create—it’s about what you acquire.

And Disney has just made another big move in that direction.

According to a new report from Deadline, one of the most popular children’s shows in the world is preparing to make the leap from Netflix to Disney+.

According to Netflix sources, the streamer opted not to renew the CoComelon license due to decline in viewership for the preschool phenom, which was down nearly 60% from 2023 H1 to 2024 H2 despite four new seasons (S9-S12) launching in 2024, per the streamerʼs semi-annual reports.

The show in question is CoComelon, a series that started on YouTube nearly 20 years ago. Known for its colorful animation and catchy nursery rhymes, CoComelon has become a favorite for young children around the world.

Its presence on Netflix made it easily accessible for millions of families, but as interest started to wane on that platform, Disney saw an opportunity.

While CoComelon might no longer be a dominant force on Netflix, its move to Disney+ could breathe new life into the series. After all, Disney+ is home to other massively popular children’s shows like Bluey, Spidey and His Amazing Friends, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. With this new lineup addition, CoComelon will join a curated collection of content built specifically for younger viewers.

The shift is expected to take place in January 2027, meaning that the show will remain on Netflix for the next year and a half. This gives families time to prepare for the transition and may even boost short-term interest as viewers revisit the episodes before the move.

The decision highlights how competitive the streaming space continues to be, especially when it comes to content for kids. Netflix may still dominate in terms of total subscribers, but Disney+ continues to chip away at that lead by building a library that focuses on family-friendly entertainment and long-term brand synergy.

Do your kids watch CoComelon on Netflix? Are you happy to see it moving to Disney+, or do you think it should have stayed where it was? What’s your family’s go-to show on Disney+ right now? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!

  1. Since Disney + launched, and based on its promise, I signed up, paying annually in advance. Guess who has already cancelled my next payment and is happy to leave this floundering, woke disaster that Disney + is.
