Rupert Grint, beloved for his portrayal of Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series, is facing a $2.3 million tax fine after losing a legal battle with the United Kingdom’s tax authorities. While Grint’s career has moved on from his magical beginnings, the financial legacy of his role in the Wizarding World continues to follow him.
The Tax Dispute That Sparked the Fine
Grint’s troubles began with an audit by H.M. Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the U.K.’s tax authority, reviewing his residual income earned from the Harry Potter films. Residuals, which include royalties from DVD sales, television syndications, and streaming rights, were misclassified as capital assets rather than taxable income.
This distinction matters significantly in the U.K., as income is taxed more than capital assets. The audit revealed that Grint owed back taxes on roughly £4.5 million in residuals.
The Court Rules Against Rupert Grint
Tribunal Judge Harriet Morgan ruled in favor of HMRC, affirming that the funds “derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint” and should, therefore, be classified as taxable income. The ruling solidified Grint’s $2.3 million tax obligation and set a precedent for similar cases involving celebrity earnings.
Grint’s Life After Harry Potter
Rupert Grint earned immense fame and fortune from his role in the Harry Potter films, reportedly amassing £24 million from the franchise. Since leaving the Wizarding World behind, Grint has pursued various acting projects, including his recent role in A Knock at the Cabin (2023). Despite his efforts to move forward, his financial history has included notable stumbles, such as a failed £1 million tax refund claim in 2019.
Meanwhile, J.K. Rowling Faces Legal Challenges
As Grint deals with his financial fallout, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling navigates her own legal troubles. Rowling was named in a lawsuit filed by Olympic boxer Imane Khelif, who accused Rowling and others of participating in an online cyberbullying campaign following Khelif’s gold medal victory.
The lawsuit stems from claims made by Rowling and other public figures that Khelif was “a man punching a woman,” despite the boxer’s compliance with all regulations to compete in the women’s category. If found guilty, those involved could face fines or even prison time.
The Complex Legacy of the Wizarding World
Despite ongoing controversy surrounding Rowling, HBO has pledged that the author will have input on its upcoming Harry Potter reboot series. Grint and his co-starts, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), will not reprise their roles.
