The magic of Harry Potter is set to re-enter our lives with a new adaptation from HBO, and speculation is swirling around the casting choices for the iconic characters.
Yesterday, Variety reported that award-winning actor Mark Rylance is on the casting wish-list to portray the beloved Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. Known for his roles in The BFG and Ready Player One, Rylance brings a captivating presence that could make him an intriguing choice for the part.
This new HBO series, described as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s books, will span seven seasons, each covering one of the novels. Warner Bros. has clarified that, although the new series will feature a completely new cast, the original films remain a core part of the Harry Potter legacy.

HBO and Warner Bros. are currently in pre-production, assessing potential candidates for the show’s major roles. Although negotiations with Rylance have yet to begin, Warner Bros. has reportedly reached out to gauge his interest. An HBO spokesperson commented: “We appreciate that such a high profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
Rylance’s casting would make him the fourth actor to take on the role of Dumbledore. Fans fondly remember Richard Harris, who brought warmth to the character in the first two films, and Michael Gambon, who portrayed Dumbledore through the final films in the series. Jude Law also stepped into the headmaster’s shoes as a younger Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts series. Rylance’s past roles, including the kind-hearted giant in The BFG and the wise VR architect in Ready Player One, showcase his ability to play characters with both gravitas and a sense of wonder.

The casting process is still underway, and the hunt for young actors to play Harry, Ron, and Hermione has already begun with open calls across the UK and Ireland. The series is expected to start filming in 2025, with an anticipated release in 2026.
The world of Harry Potter is expanding in more ways than one. Universal’s upcoming Epic Universe park will feature immersive Wizarding World attractions, including the Ministry of Magic and 1920s Paris from Fantastic Beasts.
Gaming enthusiasts can also look forward to a potential “Hogwarts Legacy” sequel and experience the thrill of “Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions”, a multiplayer game that brings the iconic magical sport to life.
