Halloween Horror Nights fans expect plenty of things to go wrong once they step inside a haunted house. Unfortunately, they’re supposed to be part of the show.
Universal Studios Hollywood kicked off its 2026 Halloween event on September 3, and some guests have already walked away talking about unexpected problems. Several visitors have shared accounts of effects failing or behaving strangely inside some of this year’s major experiences.
Some of the glitches have been amusing. Others have left visitors frustrated after spending money and time on an event where elaborate effects play such an important role.
Universal’s Biggest Halloween Event Is Back
Halloween Horror Nights is now running at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood. Orlando launched its event on August 28, while Hollywood followed on September 3. Both continue on select nights through November 1.
Once nighttime arrives, Universal trades its regular atmosphere for haunted houses, scare zones, performers, entertainment, and fog-filled environments.
The houses draw much of the attention. Some use famous horror and entertainment properties, while others tell original stories created specifically for the event.
Universal packs these walkthrough experiences with detailed sets, lighting, screens, sound, animatronics, performers, and special effects. Those elements work together to convince visitors they’ve stepped into the worlds surrounding them.
Hollywood has eight houses for 2026, along with Terror Tram starring Art the Clown. With so many moving pieces involved, however, guests have already encountered a few noticeable problems.
A Roku Screen Becomes an Unexpected Guest Star
One of the more unusual reported glitches involved Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness.
The house draws inspiration from Ozzy Osbourne’s music, life, and solo career. Instead of encountering only carefully designed horror imagery, though, one visitor reportedly spotted something considerably less intimidating.
A window outside the house uses a television to create part of the scene. According to the guest, the intended visual wasn’t playing. The display instead showed the Roku TV default screen.
It wasn’t the only technology-related complaint to emerge.
Visitors also reported problems with Stranger Things 5, an experience that recreates locations and moments connected to the show’s fifth and final season. Hawkins National Laboratory is among the recognizable environments featured.
According to fans, some televisions inside the house weren’t functioning properly.
Another visitor reported an especially strange problem involving a Will Byers mannequin. Instead of moving as intended, the figure reportedly shook so aggressively that the moment became funny rather than frightening.

Paying Guests Expect the Effects to Deliver
A malfunctioning screen might seem insignificant compared with everything else happening during Halloween Horror Nights. For someone who has invested considerable time into reaching that scene, however, it can matter much more.
Halloween Horror Nights isn’t included with regular daytime admission. Visitors need separate event tickets, and Universal sells options ranging from General Admission to upgrades such as Universal Express and the R.I.P. Tour.
Popular houses can also draw large crowds.
That means visitors may spend a substantial portion of the night waiting before finally getting inside. The walkthrough itself only lasts several minutes, making every scene part of a relatively short experience.
When an important effect doesn’t function properly, visitors can feel as if they missed something they waited and paid to see.
Some frustrated guests have called for refunds, and one visitor went so far as to describe the experience as a “total rip-off.”
Of course, complicated theme park experiences occasionally encounter technical trouble. Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood is also at the very beginning of its 2026 run, giving Universal time to address problems as the season continues.

Hollywood Has Eight Houses Running This Season
Even with those early complaints, visitors have plenty of horror experiences to choose from at Universal Studios Hollywood.
The eight haunted houses offered for Halloween Horror Nights 2026 are:

- Hellraiser
- Evil Dead Burn
- Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness
- Killer Klowns From Outer Space
- Dead, Deader, Deadest
- KILLceañera: Music by SLASH
The Terror Tram, starring Art the Clown, provides another major option beyond those eight houses.
This year’s Terror Tram takes visitors onto Universal’s famous backlot, where Art headlines a twisted Christmas-themed experience.
Running that much entertainment each night also requires an enormous number of individual pieces to work properly. Screens, props, lighting, performers, figures, and special effects all contribute to what visitors ultimately experience.

There’s Plenty of Halloween Horror Nights Left
Universal Studios Hollywood only opened Halloween Horror Nights on September 3, so these early glitches don’t necessarily indicate how the rest of the season will go.
The event still has nearly two months remaining.
Universal, therefore, has plenty of opportunities to address technical trouble as additional event nights arrive. But the early reactions also demonstrate why even relatively small failures can become noticeable.
Halloween Horror Nights depends on convincing visitors that they’ve temporarily entered another place. Every screen, figure, sound, and effect helps maintain that illusion.
A Roku default screen can destroy it pretty quickly.
For guests who spent money and waited in line to be scared, that’s one surprise they probably won’t want to see again.
