In a galaxy not so far away, the Force is shifting once more.
On May 22, 2026, Disney and Lucasfilm are set to propel Star Wars back into the cinematic spotlight with The Mandalorian and Grogu, a groundbreaking Mando-Verse adventure that could mark a turning point for the franchise. When Jon Favreau’s film was announced, fans immediately began speculating on the future of The Mandalorian Season 4 and Dave Filoni’s highly-anticipated New Republic-era movie.
Back in January 2024, Lucasfilm unveiled The Mandalorian and Grogu as their flagship live-action Star Wars project, taking precedence over the three films Kathleen Kennedy introduced during the previous year’s Star Wars Celebration. Kennedy praised Favreau and Filoni for their monumental contributions to the galaxy far, far away, saying, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen” (via StarWars.com).
But the announcement left a wave of questions in its wake. Would this theatrical debut signal the end of The Mandalorian Season 4? What about Filoni’s ambitious Mando-Verse crossover film? An October 2024 report from The Hollywood Reporter seemed to provide some clarity, claiming Disney had decided to pivot, replacing the fourth season of The Mandalorian with a feature film. The outlet stated, “Instead of a fourth season, Disney decided to pivot The Mandalorian to launch its first Star Wars feature film since The Rise of Skywalker.”
This daring move aligns with Disney’s evolving strategy for the franchise but not without growing pains. Season 3 of The Mandalorian faced challenges, from addressing Cara Dune’s (Gina Carano) absence to refocusing the narrative on Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff). Pedro Pascal’s reduced physical presence as Din Djarin and polarizing cameos by Lizzo and Jack Black also drew mixed reactions. Despite these hurdles, fans held out hope for a fourth season—until recent reports seemingly grounded those expectations.
However, new insights suggest The Mandalorian may not be out of the streaming game just yet. According to The InSneider (via The Direct), the fourth season is “still in development” for Disney+, though The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive in theaters first. This update only adds to the swirling confusion around Lucasfilm’s roadmap.
Meanwhile, Temuera Morrison, the actor behind Boba Fett, weighed in on the evolving priorities at Lucasfilm. Speaking recently, Morrison expressed uncertainty about returning as the iconic bounty hunter, saying, “I think we’re just put on the shelf for a little bit. Maybe we come off the shelf later.” Morrison also noted he’s unlikely to appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu, adding to fans’ frustrations as The Book of Boba Fett spinoff remains in limbo.
As for Favreau’s upcoming film, production has wrapped, and Dave Filoni couldn’t be more thrilled. At the Skeleton Crew premiere, Filoni shared his excitement about Grogu’s evolution: “It was great seeing Grogu. He’s become such a star, and it’s amazing how it’s evolved, what we can do now with the puppetry compared to Season 1.”
The announcement of The Mandalorian and Grogu less than a year after Kathleen Kennedy teased three other Star Wars films—none of which have release dates—has left fans scratching their heads. Adding to the chaos, a planned Star Wars movie for December 2026 quietly vanished from Disney’s release calendar, further fueling speculation.
In the meantime, Filoni remains hard at work on Ahsoka Season 2, which was announced alongside The Mandalorian and Grogu. The second season will seemingly expand on storylines from the first and dive deeper into the Star Wars Rebels connections. “I’ve been writing it, and I’m still the single writer on it,” Filoni noted, underscoring his dedication to delivering a compelling follow-up.
As Lucasfilm navigates these turbulent hyperspace lanes, one thing is clear: the journey ahead is anything but predictable. While The Mandalorian and Grogu aims to rekindle the magic of the Mando-Verse, the potential absence of The Mandalorian Season 4 leaves fans wondering what’s next for Din Djarin and Grogu on Disney+. With new shows like Skeleton Crew currently airing and Simon Kinberg’s trilogy in the pipeline, the future of the galaxy far, far away is brimming with both promise and uncertainty.

Absolutely to season 4 of the Mandalorian! What took them so long and why were they being so stupid in the first place! If you make something that everybody loves you don’t stop making it. That was stupidity on the part of Disney+. I say more more more! And why stop at season 4? Give the fans what they love!
Would love to see it as long as they understand the focus has to be on the main character not Bo Katan. I live her character, but she must be a supporting character.
Can we please get a new writer for Ahsoka season 2? I loved what Filoni did in the animated realm, but it does not seem to be translating well into live action. Him being the only writer on Ahsoka did not turn out well imo.
Mando season 4 should be a top priority after the movie. I loved how S3 opened up a bigger world but I’d love to see Mando and Grogu doing their thing like 2 and 3 again. And bring back Dune. What an unbelievably childish firing that was. A total disgrace on Disney’s part. You welcome back the weirdo Gunn because he is anti Trump and Not Dune because she is conservative. The hypocrisy is too much.
Yes! Bring back Mando & Grogu! Everyone loved that little Grogu but you mess around on other projects constantly. Grogu merchandise sells like hotcakes. But I’ll be honest…I’m getting real tired of waiting for a new season and you’re making interest wane. Quite ridiculous to bring a new character to life that everyone loves and then just dump it on some back burner. Shame on you!
I was really looking forward to a forth season of the mandalorian streaming. I’m invested in the mando-virse. The movie is nice and can answer some questions about grogu, but I still want to have Mando and grogu to have continued adventures that come into my home for weeks and allow me to watch and rewatch them
I’m a huge mando fan. I’m looking forward to all areas of this new universe. The idea of an epic movie even better. And then a nice fourth season spin-off because of it and all of the incredible ideas that this opportunity brings. Is incredibly exciting and hopefully we’ll bring Star wars themed shows back into the light. I’ve been a dedicated Star wars fan since 1978 and have enjoyed any and all aspects of it some more than others of course and as far as the animation stuff let’s just call it stuff that was a let down. And with the capabilities of creating incredible animation nowadays I would love to see some real animation as far as Star wars based products. As for the movie The Mando Grogru movie it couldn’t come at a better time the sooner the better.
Bring the Mandalorian, season 4 back and continue with many more seasons after. Why ever did you want to fix something that wasn’t broke??? We’re waiting too long in between seasons and people just don’t go to the theaters like they used to. My closest theater is 30 mi away and a lot of people wait until movies come back to streaming to watch them. I enjoy sitting in my own home watching it on TV. It’s my favorite show and I don’t want it to end, I even post grogu memes on Instagram for everyone to come daily to look at them. I don’t like Kathleen Kennedy’s ideas and John Fabreau and Dave Filoni are doing a great job. But that little green puppet, grogu really took off, in my opinion is even more important than Pedro Pascal and probably his body doubles are doing more of the work?!?! But you’re waiting too long, not making enough episodes on TV when it does there, been taking it to the theater and you’re making people so confused, it’s going to take the interest out of what once was a gold mine selling viewing subscriptions for Disney, merchandise, etc. and people absolutely losing interest. We hung on the end of our seats waiting for a new season, but I’m not waiting on my safe for a new movie and probably won’t get to see it until I can stream it. Bring it back to television!!!
