Really? Father censors daughter’s Disney storybooks to correct ‘problem’ of gender roles, stereotypes

The subjects of gender roles and gender stereotypes have been on the hearts and minds and in the media for quite a while now as individuals and groups have conversations about what exactly roles and stereotypes mean, what they afford to, or limit from, an individual, and whether they should be abandoned completely.

And for one father has taken matters into his own hands when it comes to equipping his daughter with the idea of gender-neutrality. In his TikTok videos, many of which have gone viral, the dad, who goes by the name @dcaspers on the platform, uses his powers as a digital wizard to create new conversations within his daughter’s Disney children’s books.

In one of his most inflammatory videos, @dcaspers re-routes a story from Disney’s The Princess and the Frog that involves Princess Tiana baking for her beau and serving Prince Naveen. In this dad’s version of the story, Princess Tiana tells the prince that the snack she has just made is only for her, and he captions that part of the video with the words, “Sorry prince, make your own damn nachos.”

In another TikTok video, @dcaspers makes some changes to the gender roles and stereotypes he finds offensive in one of his daughter’s books that features Belle from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

A father is stirring the pot online after releasing a series of TikTok clips that show him editing out "gender stereotypes" in his daughter's Disney Princess books.

In this story, the Disney version has Belle baking brownies for her beastly beau. (Say that 10 times fast!) But @dcaspers doesn’t think so. Instead, he creates a storyline in which Belle works all day long and picks something up on the way home.

Nevermind that they are Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies.

Belle’s offering in place of brownies makes Beast sad, so Belle explains that she only makes 78 cents to his one dollar, so she’s on a budget. And she offers no apologies.

@dcaspers uses hashtags like #madatdisney and #girldad. He has nearly 50,000 followers, and his videos have nearly 2.5 million likes. His song of choice on each of his “Dad Hack” videos is “Mad at Disney” by Salem Ilese, and it’s no wonder, with lyrics like these:

“I’m mad at Disney, Disney
They tricked me, tricked me
Had me wishing on a shooting star
But now I’m twenty-something
I still know nothing
About who I am or what I’m not
So call me a pessimist
But I don’t believe in it
Finding a true love’s kiss is ********
‘Cause I felt sad love
I felt bad love
Sometimes happy love (happy love)
Turns into giving up (giving up)
I felt hurt love
By the word love
What the hell is love supposed to feel like?
What the hell is love? What the hell is love?
What the hell is love supposed to feel like?
My fairy grandma warned me
Cinderella’s story
Only ended in a bad divorce
The prince ain’t sleeping when he
Takes his sleeping beauty
To the motel on his snow-white horse
So call me a pessimist
But I don’t believe in it
Finding a true love’s kiss is ********
‘Cause I felt sad love (sad love)
I felt bad love (bad love)
Sometimes happy love (happy love)
Turns into giving up (giving up)
I felt hurt love (hurt love)
By the word love (word love)
What the hell is love supposed to feel like?
What the hell is love? What the hell is love?
What the hell is love supposed to feel like?
What the hell is love? What the hell is love?
What the hell is love supposed to feel like?
I’m mad at Disney, Disney
They tricked me, tricked me
No more wishing on a shooting star”
