Plus-Size Guests Turned Away at Universal Orlando as 7 Major Rides Enforce Strict Size Caps

Universal Orlando Resort has earned a reputation for delivering some of the most exciting attractions in the theme park world. Whether it’s a groundbreaking dark ride or a record-breaking coaster, the resort continues to raise the bar for thrills.

Yet alongside that success, a different conversation continues to gain attention among guests. More visitors, particularly taller and plus-size guests, are questioning whether some of Universal’s attractions are designed with enough flexibility to accommodate a wider range of body types.

For some guests, the issue isn’t just about comfort. It can mean waiting in line for a major attraction only to discover that the restraint system will not allow them to ride.

A Concern That Reaches Every Park

The complaints are not limited to a single attraction or park.

Many guests describe similar experiences across Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and now Epic Universe. While each attraction uses different ride vehicles and restraint systems, the concerns often sound familiar.

Tall riders frequently mention cramped seating and limited legroom. Plus-size guests often point out that restraint systems can be difficult to secure, even though they fit comfortably on attractions elsewhere.

As Universal has introduced more intense attractions, those concerns have followed.

Several Major Attractions Continue Drawing Attention

Some of the most frequently discussed examples can be found throughout the resort.

At Epic Universe, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment has already become a fan favorite, but guests have reported difficulties with the seating and restraints. Test seats are available outside the attraction, yet some visitors still find the fit more challenging than expected.

Stardust Racers has generated similar feedback. The coaster’s high-speed design requires a secure restraint system, leading many guests to check the test seats before entering the queue.

Over at Universal Studios Florida, Revenge of the Mummy remains one of the resort’s most popular rides. However, its older ride vehicles can feel tight for taller riders, while some plus-size guests struggle with the lap bar system.

Islands of Adventure Features Several Notable Examples

Many of the resort’s most talked-about accessibility concerns are found at Islands of Adventure.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster is often praised as one of the best roller coasters ever built. Its lap-bar restraint system gives riders a sense of openness during the experience, but some guests find the fit requirements restrictive. Taller riders also occasionally report discomfort due to limited legroom.

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure presents a different challenge. Riders can choose between the motorcycle and sidecar seating positions, but body shape and height can significantly affect which option works best.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey has generated complaints since its debut. Many guests continue to report issues with the ride’s restraint system, making it one of the most commonly discussed attractions when accessibility concerns arise.

The Incredible Hulk Coaster rounds out the list. Like many high-intensity coasters, it prioritizes safety during inversions and high-speed maneuvers, but some riders find the fit less accommodating.

Guests Want Solutions, Not Compromises

Many visitors are not asking Universal to reduce safety standards.

Instead, they believe modern ride design could provide additional flexibility through wider seating, longer seatbelts, more adjustable restraints, and expanded seating options for larger guests.

Some attractions already offer modified seating in limited areas, but many guests feel those accommodations could be expanded.

Even relatively minor changes could improve the experience for a significant number of visitors.

Disney Offers a Different Approach

Part of the reason the discussion continues is that many guests point to Walt Disney World as proof that broader accommodation is possible.

Attractions like Tower of Terror, Slinky Dog Dash, and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets generally provide more flexibility for a variety of body types. Disney has also continued improving accessibility options for guests with mobility needs.

While Disney is not immune from criticism, many visitors believe the company has found ways to balance safety, accessibility, and guest comfort.

An Ongoing Debate

Universal Orlando Resort continues investing heavily in new attractions and major expansions.

At the same time, questions about ride accessibility continue to follow many of its most popular experiences. As Epic Universe grows and new attractions arrive, guests will likely keep asking whether future ride systems can better accommodate a wider range of riders.

For now, the debate remains very much alive throughout the resort.
