Universal Extends Nearly Year-Long ‘Jurassic Park’ Shutdowns for ‘Jurassic World’ Transition

Universal Orlando Resort fans have seen this story play out before. A classic attraction or land remains mostly untouched for years, and rumors start swirling about updates, eventually leading the resort to lean harder into newer franchises that appeal to modern audiences.

That approach helped reshape Universal Studios Florida over the last two decades. Back to the Future: The Ride disappeared in favor of The Simpsons Ride. Jaws closed to make room for more Wizarding World expansion. Disaster! became Fast & Furious: Supercharged. While some guests still miss those older experiences, Universal has consistently prioritized franchises with stronger current popularity.

Now, many fans think Jurassic Park could be heading toward the same fate.

Between a major attraction’s closure and another important location’s shutdown, the signs point to a much larger Jurassic World presence at Islands of Adventure.

Jurassic Park Still Honors the Original Movie

One reason this conversation has become so emotional for longtime fans is that Jurassic Park land still feels incredibly tied to the original 1993 film.

The towering gates, jungle scenery, waterfalls, and colorful design all give the area a classic adventure movie atmosphere that feels very different from some of Universal’s newer lands. Walking through Jurassic Park still feels like stepping directly into the original movie.

The area also contains several major attractions and family experiences. Jurassic Park River Adventure remains the land’s signature ride. Guests can explore the Discovery Center, climb through Camp Jurassic, ride Pteranodon Flyers, and stop by the dinosaur-themed games throughout the area.

Then there is VelociCoaster, which already brought a major Jurassic World presence into the land.

That blend of old and new currently works surprisingly well, but recent developments have many fans wondering how long that balance will last.

River Adventure’s Refurbishment Has Sparked Plenty of Theories

The biggest source of speculation is easily Jurassic Park River Adventure.

Universal confirmed the attraction would close for an extended refurbishment lasting nearly a year. On one hand, the attraction clearly needs repairs. Guests have spent years noticing broken effects, malfunctioning dinosaurs, and scenes that no longer operate the way they once did.

A lengthy refurbishment honestly feels overdue.

Still, many fans immediately connected the closure to what happened at Universal Studios Hollywood. That park transformed its own Jurassic Park water ride into Jurassic World – The Ride, adding updated technology and stronger connections to the newer film series.

As a result, rumors quickly spread that Islands of Adventure could eventually undergo a similar overhaul.

Universal has not officially announced a retheme. Some reports indicate the refurbishment is focused mostly on repairs and operational improvements. But Universal has also remained unusually quiet about exactly what work is happening behind the scenes.

That uncertainty alone has kept fans talking nonstop.

Even if Jurassic Park River Adventure returns in November with its current name and storyline intact, many guests believe the attraction could still transition into Jurassic World down the road.

Thunder Falls Terrace Could Signal Bigger Changes

The closure of Thunder Falls Terrace only intensified those rumors.

Universal recently confirmed the restaurant would close, and speculation quickly shifted toward the possibility of Hammond’s replacing it.

For Jurassic fans, Hammond’s carries major significance because it references John Hammond, the founder of Jurassic Park, portrayed by Richard Attenborough in the original movie.

The restaurant concept later appeared as a real dining location at Universal Studios Beijing inside its Jurassic World-themed area. Bringing that concept to Islands of Adventure would represent a huge thematic shift for Jurassic Park land.

Thunder Falls Terrace currently blends naturally with the older Jurassic Park atmosphere. A Hammond’s restaurant inspired by Jurassic World would adopt a much cleaner, more modern visual style tied directly to the newer franchise.

And once those changes begin, it becomes easier to imagine other sections of the land eventually following the same direction.

VelociCoaster Already Proves Jurassic World Works

Universal also has a major reason to keep expanding Jurassic World inside the parks: guests love it.

The first Jurassic World film became a massive success when it debuted in 2015, and Universal has continued expanding the franchise ever since. The newest film starring Scarlett Johansson arrived in 2025, showing the studio still believes heavily in the property’s future.

Meanwhile, VelociCoaster has become one of the most celebrated attractions Universal Orlando Resort has ever built.

Fans constantly praise the coaster’s launches, pacing, and intensity. Even the queue experience stands out thanks to the interactions featuring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

The ride already feels like a blueprint for how Universal wants the Jurassic franchise represented moving forward.

That is why so many fans believe these current closures may only be the beginning.

A Jurassic World Transformation Feels Possible

At the moment, Universal has not officially announced a complete Jurassic World conversion for Islands of Adventure. Jurassic Park River Adventure may reopen largely unchanged, and Thunder Falls Terrace could still become something entirely different.

But when you step back and look at the bigger picture, the speculation makes sense.

Universal has repeatedly shown it is willing to modernize older experiences when newer franchises gain stronger popularity. Jurassic World remains a major success for the company, and VelociCoaster has already established the franchise as one of the park’s biggest draws.

For fans who grew up with the original Jurassic Park, that possibility may feel bittersweet.

Still, if Universal Orlando Resort’s history proves anything, it is that the resort rarely stops evolving for very long.
