One Year After $1 Billion Movie, Disney Unexpectedly Confirms Stitch’s Big Screen Return
Disney isn’t making Stitch fans wait very long for another trip to the theater. Fresh off one of the biggest movie success stories in recent years, the lovable blue alien is officially headed back to the big screen. Many fans assumed Disney’s next move would simply be the already announced live-action sequel, but the company surprised audiences with another theatrical project arriving much sooner.
Stitch’s Popularity Has Never Really Faded
Stitch has remained one of Disney’s biggest fan favorites since Lilo & Stitch (2002) first arrived in theaters. The animated film introduced viewers to the unlikely bond between a young Hawaiian girl and a mischievous alien experiment whose life changes after discovering the meaning of family.
The movie quickly earned praise for balancing humor with heartfelt storytelling. Its message about belonging and the idea that family means no one gets left behind has continued to connect with audiences for more than two decades.
That popularity never disappeared after the film’s original release. Stitch became the face of the television series, home-video sequels, merchandise, and Disney Parks experiences worldwide. Even today, the character remains one of Disney’s most recognizable creations, making the franchise a natural choice for another theatrical comeback.

Disney’s Live-Action Gamble Paid Off
When Disney announced a live-action version of Lilo & Stitch (2025), expectations were high. The finished product exceeded nearly all of them.
The remake became one of the year’s biggest worldwide hits, bringing in more than $1.038 billion at the global box office. That total made it the highest-grossing live-action-and-animated hybrid film ever released.
The movie attracted longtime fans who grew up with Stitch while introducing the character to a new generation of families. Its impressive financial performance also showed Disney that audiences were eager for even more adventures featuring Experiment 626.
Instead of slowing down after reaching that milestone, Disney is already preparing another theatrical release.

A New Stitch Short Arrives This November
Before the live-action sequel reaches theaters, Disney has another surprise planned.
The studio has confirmed that a brand-new theatrical short titled Lilo & Scratch will premiere in November 2026.
Fans first caught a glimpse of the project during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. According to Deadline, the story follows Stitch as he encounters a new furry rival—a cat determined to eat Pudge, Stitch’s beloved fish. As expected, the setup creates plenty of opportunities for the playful chaos fans have come to expect.
The short also reunites familiar talent from across the franchise. Chris Sanders returns as the voice of Stitch, continuing the role he created more than 20 years ago. Maia Kealoha, who portrayed Lilo in the live-action remake, will also voice the character in the animated short.
Rather than waiting until the next feature film arrives, fans will get another Stitch adventure before the end of the year.

The Franchise Will Continue With Another Feature Film
Disney’s announcement didn’t stop with the theatrical short.
Following the enormous success of Lilo & Stitch (2025), the company has officially confirmed that the live-action story will continue with another feature film.
Chris Sanders is expected to return while continuing to voice Stitch, giving many fans confidence that the sequel will maintain the personality and heart that made both versions of the character so memorable.
Disney has already scheduled the sequel for a theatrical release on May 26, 2028.
Although the studio has not revealed story details, the decision to continue the franchise isn’t surprising. Crossing the billion-dollar mark placed Lilo & Stitch among Disney’s biggest modern successes, making another installment an easy choice.

Stitch’s Future Looks Brighter Than Ever
Disney has made it clear that Stitch isn’t going anywhere.
The franchise will return to theaters twice over the next couple of years, beginning with Lilo & Scratch in November 2026 before the live-action sequel arrives on May 26, 2028.
More than two decades after his animated debut, Stitch continues finding new audiences without losing the fans who have loved him from the beginning. If Disney’s recent success is any indication, Experiment 626 still has plenty of adventures waiting on the big screen.
