Disney Hit With Big Loss at Major Awards Show For First Time Ever

To say that 2023 was a tough year for Disney at the box office would be an understatement. The Walt Disney Company released more than 20 movies in 2023, but only a few of them could be considered relatively successful. In fact, Disney lost nearly $1 billion on just a handful of movies, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and The Haunted Mansion.

What is unfortunate is that, despite receiving mostly positive reviews, Disney movies like The Haunted Mansion, Elemental, and Wish, could simply not pull people into the theaters.

And now, Disney has been hit with another blow.

The prominent Annie Awards released their nominees for the 2024 awards show and, for the first time ever, Walt Disney Animation Studios received zero nominations in the Best Feature category. The Annual Annie awards has been around since 1972, and Disney has never failed to receive at least one Best Picture nomination, even if it was a Pixar film.

One thing that is also sure to sting is that the movie leading the nominations is Nimona. Nimona was actually set to be released under the Fox-owned, Blue Sky Studios. Disney purchased Fox in 2019 and, along with it, Nimona. But Disney decided to shelve the project when it purchased Fox, and ended up selling it to Netflix.

Thankfully, it is not all bad news.

Elemental received six nominations, including Best Character Design, Best Production Design, and Best Music. Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid also received several nominations. The Halle Bailey-led remake was nominated for Best Character Animation in a Live-Action Feature.

Disney will also receive special recognition during the awards show. The Annie Award voting committee announced that Walt Disney Animation will receive a Special Recognition Award for “recognizing unique and outstanding achievement not recognized within the existing award category structure.”

Back in November, Disney CEO Bob Iger admitted that the company had “lost focus” over the last few years. In 2o22, the company lost more than $100 million on Lightyear. Then, just a few months later, it lost just under $200 million on Strange World. 2023 fared no better, with Marvel’s newest film, The Marvels, having the lowest opening in history for the superhero studio.

Disney is hoping that 2024 will see the company rebound from a disastrous couple of years. 2024 will see the release of Inside Out 2, Deadpool 3, and Mufasa: The Lion King.
