New ‘Ghostbusters’ Prequel Announced With Release Date and First Look

The Ghostbusters are heading into uncharted waters—literally.

Dark Horse Comics has announced the release of their latest miniseries, “Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest,” a four-issue adventure that brings ghostly pirates into the heart of Manhattan. Picking up after the success of “Ghostbusters: Back in Town,” which bridges the gap between the films, Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), this new comic delivers an exciting mix of history and supernatural mayhem..

Dark Horse’s synopsis teases the thrilling chaos ahead:

“In ‘Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest,’ the Ghostbusters’ increasing notoriety is throwing them for a loop. While Trevor steadies himself by trying to plan a ‘friendiversary’ celebration for him and Lucky, Phoebe meets someone who might be a real friend instead of just a social media follower. But friendships new and old have to take a back seat to more immediate concerns when a ghostly saber summons the ghost of Captain Kidd and threatens to transform NYC into a ghostly pirate town!”

The series promises to offer not only ghostly action but also a deeper look into the personal lives of the new Ghostbusters team, continuing the character-driven approach introduced in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Trevor and Phoebe’s everyday struggles provide the emotional anchor amidst the chaos of pirate hauntings, ensuring the story resonates with fans of all ages.

The comic book series also sees the return of Callie Spengler and Gary Grooberson, who were played by Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd, respectively, in the new films.

The art team of Aviv Or and Cris Peter brings the story to life with bold, dynamic visuals that capture the eerie charm of the Ghostbusters universe. Early exclusive previews from Nerdist.com reveal glowing pirate sabers, detailed ghostly designs, and the signature action-packed antics of the Ghostbusters crew.

Writer David M. Booher delved into New York City’s historical hauntings to craft the story, explaining to Nerdist.com, “When I researched ghostly happenings in New York City, I came across the true story of Captain Kidd. He owned a house near Wall Street with his family. Turns out, historians are divided on whether he was the fearsome pirate we know or actually framed for piracy. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring him back to ask him ourselves. What could be more fun than having our Ghostbusters stop an angry Captain Kidd from turning Manhattan into a 17th-century ghost pirate den?”

“Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest” hits shelves on May 21, inviting fans to join Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), Phoebe (McKenna Grace), and the rest of the team on their most swashbuckling mission yet. With ghosts, pirates, and New York City hanging in the balance, the Ghostbusters are ready to prove once again why no one does ghostbusting better.
