A new chapter in the Ghostbusters franchise is underway.

After the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), which grossed $204.3 million worldwide, Sony Pictures greenlit the sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024). But despite generating $201.9 million globally, Frozen Empire received mixed reviews. However, the franchise shows no sign of slowing down, with more films and a TV series now on the way.

Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan, who also co-wrote the film alongside Jason Reitman (they had opposite roles on Afterlife), confirmed that the Ghostbusters universe is expanding. In an interview with The Direct, he said, “We take the responsibility and the joy of being the keepers of the flame of Ghostbusters very seriously. We definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big Ghostbusters stories on the big screen. And stay tuned. There’ll be more.”

With all that said, the next step in the Ghostbusters saga is a 3D animated television series currently in development with Netflix. Kenan, who’s producing alongside Reitman, revealed his excitement for the project, saying, “We are really excited about the stories that are starting to be told there, and the way that it intersects with the Ghostbusters stories that you and I love is going to be thrilling for our audiences.”

The animated series will be produced under Ghost Corps, Sony Pictures Animation, and Netflix, a collaboration that’s expected to bring fresh energy to the beloved franchise. Though plot details remain scarce, Kenan previously hinted at the show’s direction in 2022, describing it as “the next generation of Ghostbusters animated television” and teasing that it will “reach into the future” to explore new narratives in an untapped era.

Meanwhile, Frozen Empire left audiences with an intriguing post-credits scene involving the mischievous Mini-Pufts, which Kenan has hinted could be the beginning of a new storyline in a future film.

Frozen Empire might have been a box office success, but the film is not without its flaws. Despite bringing back characters from the original films—such as Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman and Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore—the sequel faced criticism from fans and critics alike for featuring too many characters. However, many others praised the film for feeling like a live-action adaptation of the popular animated TV series The Real Ghostbusters (1986–1991), which might suggest that the upcoming Netflix show will be a big hit.
