New Freaky Friday Sequel Trailer Drops Ahead of August Release

Disney released the official trailer for Freakier Friday (2025) today, and it’s not holding back. The sneak peek gives fans a full look at the story, introduces the key characters, both returning and new, and sets the stage for a magical, multigenerational sequel. From mother-daughter tension to wedding drama and mystical mix-ups, the trailer promises a chaotic but heartwarming return to the beloved body-swap universe.

It’s Been 22 Years Since the Original Swapped Our Hearts

It’s been 22 years since we last saw Anna and Tess Coleman switch lives in Disney’s Freaky Friday (2003), and now, they’re back—and the magic is happening all over again. The newly released trailer for the 2025 sequel gives fans a fresh look at what’s to come, complete with family drama, comedic chaos, and plenty of heartfelt moments.

Let’s Recap What Happened in the 2003 Freaky Friday

In the 2003 film, Anna (played by Lindsay Lohan) was a rebellious teenager struggling to connect with her overworked, no-nonsense mom, Tess (played by Jamie Lee Curtis). After a mysterious fortune cookie caused them to switch bodies, they were forced to literally walk in each other’s shoes. Hilarity ensued,  from band auditions to therapy sessions, but by the end, both women gained a new understanding of one another and swapped back with a stronger bond.

What’s New in 2025? A Wedding, Two Teens, and One Familiar Spell

Now, two decades later, they’re facing a brand-new challenge: a wedding. Anna is all grown up and preparing to marry again—but her daughter Harper isn’t thrilled. Add in Tess’s well-meaning interference, a new stepdaughter-to-be named Lily, and some leftover tension, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Naturally, the universe decides it’s time for another lesson—and another body swap.

New Characters, Same Old Chaos

The trailer reveals that Anna and Tess aren’t the only ones with growing pains. Harper (played by Julia Butters) and Lily (Sophia Hammons) aren’t hitting it off, and the family stress is boiling over. So when the familiar magic strikes again, it’s not just about Tess and Anna—it’s about bridging the generational gap and making this new family work.

Jake Returns—And So Do the Feels

Fans of the original will be thrilled to see Chad Michael Murray back as Jake, the former teen heartthrob who crosses paths with Anna again, just when she’s not exactly herself. His appearance brings a sweet touch of nostalgia and some unexpected laughs.

A New Chapter for a New Generation

Directed by Nisha Ganatra, the sequel blends comedy and emotional depth with a modern touch. From mother-daughter bonding to teenage angst and wedding madness, Freakier Friday promises to deliver both fresh laughs and emotional moments.

Coming to Theaters August 8

Whether you grew up with the original or are watching the chaos unfold for the first time, this reboot is packed with humor, heart, and a little bit of magic. Freakier Friday returns to theaters August 8, 2025, reminding us that sometimes, the only way forward is to switch things up.
