Over the years, Disney has released a number of films based on the hit book, Freaky Friday. The films, although very different, all had the same premise. A young girl and her mother are on completely different sides of the personality spectrum, and they can never seem to get along. Through some magical happenstance, the two switch places and learn what it is like to walk in the other’s shoes. Disney released a Freaky Friday film in 1976, 1995, and 2003, and, in 2018, they also released a series of the same name on The Disney Channel.
Perhaps the most popular Freaky Friday film was released in 2003, starring Lindsay Lohan as Anna Coleman and Jamie Lee Curtis as her mother, Tess. Tess is a psychiatrist, who Anna thinks is too uptight, and Anna is a musician, and her mother thinks she needs to be more serious. After reading the same message in a fortune cookie, the two find themselves in the other’s body.
It’s been more than 20 years since Disney released the beloved film, but Curtis and Lohan have never stopped expressing their desire to star in a sequel. And now, it looks like that is finally happening!
According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has greenlit Freaky Friday 2! Better yet, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are in talks to return!
Disney is getting ready to get its freaky on one more time.
The studio has tapped Nisha Ganatra, who most recently helmed episodes of Hulu miniseries Welcome to Chippendales, to direct a sequel to its 2003 family comedy Freaky Friday, giving the long-promised project momentum and putting it on track for a summer shoot in Los Angeles.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, who starred in the original, are in negotiations to reprise their roles as the mother and daughter combo who find themselves switching bodies and lives.

Curtis hinted that a sequel film was in the works early in the morning on March 29, just hours before The Hollywood Reporter’s article. She posted a photo on Instagram with Lohan and the hashtag FFDEUX — presumably for Freaky Friday 2.

Andrew Gunn — who served as producer on the 2003 film — is also set to return. We do not know who else is set to star in the sequel, or what the film’s storyline will be. Although, it wouldn’t be a Freaky Friday movie without some body switching!
At this time, we do not know if Disney is planning on giving Freaky Friday 2 a theatrical release, or if they are planning on releasing the film on Disney+. Disney has found a lot of success in releasing highly anticipated sequels on Disney+ instead of choosing a theatrical release. In 2022, Disney released Hocus Pocus 2 and Disenchanted, and fans flocked to the streaming platform.

Freaky Friday also starred Christina Vidal and Haley Hudson as Anna’s (Lohan) bandmates, Maddie and Peg. Mark Harmon starred as Ryan, Tess’s boyfriend, and Ryan Malgarini played Harry, Anna’s younger brother. And who could forget Anna’s love interest, Jake? He was played by One Tree Hill heartthrob, Chad Michael Murray.
