Neil Patrick Harris and his family have won Halloween this year with their over-the-top and adorable costumes, and this isn’t the first time.
The famous and beloved actor and his family have a long-standing tradition of dressing up for Halloween–but not just dressing up. (Hey, anyone can go as Captain Jack Sparrow!) The actor and his family–partner David Burtka and children Harper and Gideon–put amazing thought and creativity into their costumes, and the four of them always don elaborate costuming that presents a cohesive theme.
Photos of the family’s costumes this year went viral on Instagram, as did photos of the family getting dressed and made up for the big night. But before we reveal those photos, let’s look back at the family’s creativity over the years.
Check out their Halloween garb from 2011 as the family embodied characters from Peter Pan.
Two years later in 2013, Harris and family found wonder and nonsense as Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, Alice in Wonderland, and the White Rabbit.
In 2015, the quartet showed their love for the galaxy far, far away.
In 2018, it was a Haunted Mansion Halloween, complete with Constance Hatchaway, and all three of the Hitchhiking Ghosts for the win!
This year, the family’s efforts were just as creative and just as bold–especially for those who love fast food. That’s because each of the four of them donned costumes and make-up that lent themselves to creating a fast-food foursome out of the family.
Harris went as McDonald’s icon Ronald McDonald, and Burtka channeled his inner Burger King. Both children dressed up as mealtime moguls as well: Gideon was KFC’s Colonel Sanders, and Harper embodied Wendy from the major fast-food chain.
Per Mike Sington, NBC Universal exec and Hollywood’s “Ultimate Insider”:
“Neil Patrick Harris and his family always come up with creative and unique Halloween costumes. Fans look forward to what they’re going to come up with. Also, the cuteness factor of the kids is pretty much off the charts. Harris is a multi-talented performer whose talents have spanned decades. Not only does he have talent, but he also has charm, charisma, and a likability that we find comfortable and want to be around.
“For other celebrities, know it’s going to be difficult to compete with someone like Harris for a Halloween costume. He’s one of a few celebrities who have a ‘lock’ on Halloween, there’s really no sense in competing. My suggestion is just go for a costume that works for you, that you find fun, original, and interesting. Let your celebrity status power through, and don’t even worry about competing with another celebrity.”
And we can definitely see why.
