Disney World is always changing, with new attractions replacing old ones as the parks evolve.
While updates bring excitement, they also mean that some classic rides could be at risk of removal. Recent trends suggest that Disney is prioritizing intellectual property-based attractions, updating experiences to align with newer franchises and guest expectations. As a result, some beloved but aging attractions might not be around much longer.
One ride that has seemingly been on the chopping block for years is Country Bear Jamboree. While Disney recently announced an update to refresh the show with new music, many fans worry this is just a temporary fix before the attraction is phased out entirely. Animatronic-based shows have already seen cuts in other parks, and given Disney’s focus on IP-driven experiences, the bears may not be safe in the long run.
Another attraction that often sparks debate is The Hall of Presidents. While intended as an educational experience, it has become one of the more divisive offerings at Disney World. With each new administration, updates to the show cause controversy, and with the trend of reimagining attractions to avoid political tension, it’s possible that Disney could replace it with something more broadly historical rather than a direct presidential showcase.
Over in Adventureland, Swiss Family Treehouse remains largely unchanged, despite being based on a film that few modern guests have seen. It takes up a sizable footprint and could easily be converted into something more interactive and relevant.
Tomorrowland Speedway is another attraction that doesn’t quite fit Disney’s future-focused branding. The gasoline-powered cars have caused controversy, and this ride could quickly become out of place. Rumors have circulated for years that the attraction could be swapped out for an electric version or replaced entirely, making it a likely candidate for removal.
Kali River Rapids also seems vulnerable as Disney reshapes Animal Kingdom. While the water ride still draws visitors in the summer, it lacks a compelling story compared to other park attractions. With the recent announcement of Tropical Americas coming to Animal Kingdom, this ride could be re-themed or scrapped to make way for something new.
Attractions like Carousel of Progress, DINOSAUR, and Astro Orbiter also face uncertain futures, as newer ride technology and immersive storytelling become the standard. With Disney’s continued push for change, it wouldn’t be surprising if these classics eventually disappeared to make room for the next generation of attractions.
I hope the current Disney administrators don’t lose sight of Walt’s original intent for the parks. It has always been fun and education residing together. EPCOT has always been a great melding of those two things, and I would hope it still would be well into the future.
As for Carousel of Progress: That needs to remain as a tribute to the man who started it all! It’s the only thing left that was truly all Walt!
