Say Goodbye: Disney Retires Fan-Favorite Ride After a Quarter Century

Disney’s Animal Kingdom will bid farewell to one of its most thrilling attractions—temporarily. Kali River Rapids, the park’s iconic white-water rafting adventure, is set to close for its annual refurbishment beginning January 6, 2025. While Disney has yet to announce a specific reopening date, history suggests the attraction could reopen in mid-March, as it did during last year’s refurbishment.

The Story Behind Kali River Rapids

Kali River Rapids, nestled in the heart of the Asia section of Animal Kingdom, is a guest favorite for beating the Florida heat. This river-rafting ride takes adventurers on a winding, turbulent journey through the fictional Chakranadi River, surrounded by lush tropical landscapes and intricate storytelling that reflects the cultural and environmental beauty of Southeast Asia.

The attraction, which opened with Animal Kingdom in 1999, offers more than just thrills—it delivers an important message about conservation and deforestation. Riders encounter scenes of illegal logging and its devastating impact on the environment, underscoring the importance of preserving Earth’s natural wonders. The attraction’s attention to detail, from temple ruins to vibrant flora, immerses guests in an authentic experience that is as educational as it is entertaining.

What to Expect During Refurbishment

Like most water-based attractions, Kali River Rapids undergoes routine maintenance during the cooler months to ensure it remains safe, efficient, and visually stunning. Refurbishments typically include updates to the ride system, touch-ups to its scenic elements, and enhancements to guest comfort and safety.

With the ride’s closure, Animal Kingdom visitors will temporarily lose one of the park’s most refreshing attractions, but the downtime will ensure the ride continues to deliver its signature thrills for years to come.

Other Closures at Walt Disney World

The temporary closure of Kali River Rapids isn’t the only refurbishment scheduled for early 2025. Guests planning their trips should also take note of these upcoming closures:

  • Stormalong Bay and Shipwreck Pool at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort: Scheduled to close for updates from January 1, 2025, to May 31, 2025. Specific closure dates are still to be confirmed.

For guests visiting Animal Kingdom between January and mid-March, there are plenty of other attractions to enjoy while Kali River Rapids is offline. Thrill-seekers can head to Expedition Everest or soar through Pandora on Avatar Flight of Passage. Families may prefer the whimsical TriceraTop Spin or the interactive trails of Gorilla Falls Exploration and Maharajah Jungle Trek.

Although these refurbishments may temporarily alter some plans, they’re a vital part of Disney’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality experiences for its guests. By investing in regular updates and improvements, Disney ensures its attractions remain as magical and immersive as the day they debuted.

Stay tuned for updates on reopening dates for Kali River Rapids and other attractions, and don’t forget to check Disney’s official website or app for the latest information on ride availability.
