Michael Strahan, co-host of Good Morning America and NFL analyst for Fox Sports, recently found himself at the center of a nationwide controversy stemming from his actions during a pre-game broadcast on November 10, 2024, in honor of Veterans Day. During the performance of the National Anthem at Naval Base San Diego, Strahan stood with his hands interlocked in front of him instead of placing them over his heart.

Strahan’s decision drew swift backlash from viewers, many of whom took to social media to express their discontent. Some described his demeanor as “disrespectful,” particularly given the context—standing amidst military personnel on a day dedicated to honoring their sacrifices.

A group of seven men stands on a platform, each with a hand over their heart, in front of a large crowd of people in uniform. Several American flags are visible. The event appears formal, and the setting is outdoors under a clear sky.

The reaction on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) was intense, with many fans voicing their desires to see Strahan dismissed from his position at Fox Sports.

Michael Strahan disrespected the military during a Veterans Day pre-game show on @NFLonFOX. The great irony is Strahan on a ship surrounded by men and women who would willingly sacrifice their lives to protect his freedom. So, his behavior is not just repugnant, it’s downright cowardly.

While many expressed outrage at Strahan’s actions during the national anthem, others defended him, citing his military connections and philanthropic efforts.

Michael Strahan’s dad served in the Army for 23 years. He grew up on a US Army base in Germany and has given a ton of money to veteran charities. He’s standing quietly at attention. We need to stop getting so upset at every little thing.

Others pointed out that the harshest criticism came from a Newsmax host. Newsmax is an incredibly right-wing conservative news network that is largely supportive of former President Donald Trump.

Images were then shown of multiple times when Donald Trump did not put his hand over his heart during the playing of the National Anthem.

For the MAGAs crying out here that Michael Strahan “disrespected” the military during the anthem on the FOX pregame show the other day 🙄

As the story gained attention, reporters began showing up at Strahan’s New York City townhouse. Strahan became upset, took one reporter’s phone, tossed it into a bush, and told the reporter to leave his property.

After the Daily Mail published a video of the incident, Strahan took to social media to express regret over his actions, admitting that he wasn’t proud of how he handled the situation. He explained, however, that he didn’t appreciate being “ambushed” at his home.

Strahan also addressed the controversy surrounding his decision during the National Anthem. He clarified that there was no hidden meaning behind clasping his hands in front of him. He emphasized that he had spent hours honoring the military and reiterated his deep respect and love for both the military and those who serve. Strahan made it clear that he was not protesting or making any sort of statement.

Fox Sports, which employs Strahan as an analyst, responded to the controversy by standing by him. Insiders indicated that there would be no repercussions against him, as his colleagues comprehended his actions in context. The network maintained that Strahan did not make the moment about himself, aligning with his longstanding commitment to honoring veterans.

Do you think fans were being too critical of Michael Strahan? Or is it fine that he did not place his hand over his heart during the National Anthem? Share your thoughts in the comments.
