For nearly twenty years, viewers have been tuning in to Good Morning America to watch one of their favorite weathermen, Sam Champion. Champion is known for his upbeat spirit, permanent smile, and incredible storytelling capabilities. But sadly, his most recent announcement has fans worried for his health and thinking about their own.

Champion recently disclosed a battle with skin cancer. During a broadcast, he unveiled a noticeable mark on his face that led to the diagnosis of nodular basal cell carcinoma. The cancer was found to be “larger and deeper” than initially anticipated.

This alarming revelation prompted Champion to urge viewers to maintain vigilance regarding skin health. He emphasized the necessity for individuals to monitor their skin closely and seek immediate medical attention for any unusual changes or spots.

Champion’s advocacy for heightened awareness comes from his personal experience. As someone who has spent years in outdoor environments, he reflected on neglecting sunscreen in his early days. He now emphasizes that constant attention to skin protection is vital, especially for those spending significant time in the sun.

“When I’m not bringing you the weather I love nothing more than being outside, but these days I wouldn’t think about going outside without sunscreen. It wasn’t always the case…”

“I hope that one day no one has to go through surgery to get rid of skin cancer, but, right now, we have to keep our eye on our skin, our hands on our skin, be very vigilant and notice any unusual spots, and if those spots start to change, immediately get care…”

“No matter how old you are — my first one was at 26 — no matter what your skin tone, your skin type, your skin color, they’re cutting skin cancer off of everybody. So, it’s everybody’s issue.”

This is not the first time Sam Champion has faced challenges related to skin cancer. He previously underwent a live procedure in 2010 to remove a cancerous spot. Champion’s journey echoes that of his GMA colleague, Robin Roberts, who has also publicly battled cancer.

The discussions surrounding their health journeys draw the viewers’ attention to the critical importance of early detection and awareness. Champion stated, “No matter how old you are… they’re cutting skin cancer off of everybody. So, it’s everybody’s issue.”

Roberts has been an advocate for cancer awareness since her own diagnosis in 2007. By sharing their experiences, both Champion and Roberts hope to inspire others to prioritize their health and follow preventive care measures.

A Network Rife With Struggles

The Good Morning America team, while grappling with personal health challenges among its staff, has also encountered significant changes in its organizational structure. Following the recent scandal involving previously popular anchors Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, who were dismissed over an inappropriate relationship, the network has seen a considerable shift in its programming and talent.

These departures raised concerns regarding the continuity and dynamics of GMA. Rob Marciano’s firing further contributed to the turmoil within ABC News. The decision to remove him followed allegations of conflicts with colleagues and ongoing controversies. Amid these transitions, ABC President Kim Godwin stepped down under a cloud of scrutiny regarding her management approach.

The fallout from these events has ignited concerns about a talent crisis at ABC. With beloved anchors like Champion still in the spotlight, there’s apprehension about the network’s ability to maintain its viewer base and continue delivering high-quality news. Industry observers speculate that these leadership and talent issues could result in lasting impacts on Good Morning America and its reputation.

Remember, when it comes to your health, it is always important to remain vigilant. If you notice something seems different or “off”, reach out to your doctor.
