This Marvel action hero shocked audiences everywhere when he took to the stage to perform a medley of Avril Lavigne songs at this year’s Juno Awards. Thrilling of an era of pop-punk kids-at-heart, actor Simu Liu of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings performed a combination of Lavigne’s hits ‘Sk8er Boi,’ ‘Girlfriend,’ and ‘I’m With You.’

For those that may not know, the Juno Awards is a Canadian award show to recognize outstanding accomplishments in music, similar to the Grammys in America. Simu Liu and Avril Lavigne are both Canadian.
Simu Liu hosted the Juno Awards last year in 2022 and returned to host again for the 2023 event. Liu starts by acknowledging that producers kept him from singing what he planned to Avril when hosting the previous year, commencing, “This one’s for you, Avril!” Lavigne smiles in the audience and immediately raises her phone to record the performance.

Liu proceeds to perform a piano accompanied almost unplugged cover of Avril’s ‘Sk8er Boi,’ adjusting the lyrics to reflect Avril Lavigne’s accomplishments. He refers to her as a ‘Sk8er Girl’ and ‘Canada’s pride and joy.” He has a smooth crooning voice that I was not expecting from Shang Chi!
The vibe picks up as the beat to ‘Girlfriend’ begins, and Liu calls for a dance break. Liu is a pretty good dancer, but then he does a backflip and lands in a fashion that reminds everyone: “Oh yea, that guy is a Marvel superhero.”
He takes the tempo down again and plays the guitar HIMSELF while he sings a version of Lavigne’s ‘I’m With You.” Simu Liu’s singing proceeds to melt the hearts of everyone in the audience. People wave their arms in the air and sway back and forth happily.

The whole time he’s managing to rock this monochrome, ninja-turtle green jumpsuit that looks like doctor’s scrubs without sleeves while accessorizing with a gold chain. It’s a look I couldn’t pull off, but Simu is obviously nailing it. Maybe Marvel will give him a musical number in the Shang Chi sequel.
Simu Liu also plays Ken opposite Ryan Gosling’s Ken in the upcoming Barbie film! Is there anything this guy can’t do?
