Back in 2017 at the biennial D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Disney announced that the incredibly popular Shanghai Disneyland attraction, TRON Lightcycle Power Run would be coming to Walt Disney World Resort in the coming years. Construction began in 2018 and the project was scheduled to be completed in time for the Resort’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, which started on October 1.
As part of the TRON Lightcycle/Run construction, Disney had to shut down the Walt Disney World Railroad, which takes Guests on a grand circle tour of Magic Kingdom Park. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced the Parks to shut down and construction on TRON fell incredibly far behind, and the project currently has no opening date. The Walt Disney World Railroad has at this point been shut down for three years and Guests are waiting not-so-patiently for it, and TRON, to finally open.
Well, TRON still does not have an opening date, but it looks like construction may be reaching the point where the Railroad could soon be operational. Scott Gustin shared on Twitter that Disney is testing the Railroad beginning today!
NEW: Testing of the Walt Disney World Railroad will begin TODAY. This testing is just part of the overall refurbishment – the train will reopen to guests when TRON construction allows.
No guests will be riding the train during testing – gotta wait for TRON construction to reach a point that allows the railroad to reopen.

While no reopening date for the Railroad — or opening date for TRON — has been announced at this time, many are hopeful that both will open sometime next year, while Walt Disney World is at the height of its 50th Anniversary celebration.
While Guests wait for more progress on both attractions, they can head over to EPCOT to enjoy its newest ride, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and soon, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, which is scheduled to open in summer 2022. There is also a brand-new fireworks experience, Disney Enchantment, at Magic Kingdom Park, and a new nighttime show at EPCOT called Harmonious.
Are you excited to see Disney World finally testing the Railroad?
